This is a website for the Boutenko family. The article is 'Ode to a Green Smoothy'. They had whole family been raw for 10 years and recently found even greater health by adding lots of dark leafy greens to their smoothies. The book researches human nutrition from a new angle. She studies the eating habits of wild chimpanzee. And, lots other great stuff. It was the missing link for me as far as nutrition goes.
Here's my synopsis. We need more greens!!! If I could eat 2 bunches of greens a day, I could not chew them properly. So, by blending them with enough fruit to make them taste good, and a little water, I've been getting them in.
Then I started craving them. Even adding less fruit sometimes. We need bitter, dark, leafy greens! Juicing them I was throwing away the best part. The fiber keeps my pipes clean, carries away toxins, and is loaded with nutrients. I have been off and on raw foods for years and it has been hard for me. This is making it easy by giving me what I need in a form my body can assimilate easily. I feel amazing! It has been 5 months now of a smoothy almost everyday. And, now with spring coming on I'm craving them more and working up to a Green Smoothy Cleanse. I even send my boyfriend to work with one each morning, and if I can get him drink it it has to taste good. And, if I can get him to keep doing it it has to be making a difference. I said, ' if you don't change anything else drink this everyday', and it is making him feel great.
There are so many great things about blended whole foods.
Are there any other folks hip to the Green Smoothy majik?
What are you experiencing so far?

Now, I have worked up to one bunch greens per smoothie. I actually crave the little bitter, like chocolate, or something. Strawberries are just coming out local and organic and I can't get enough. Strawberry spinach smoothies are amazing. My nails are stronger and smoother, allergies are clearing up, candida symptoms gone too. Fiber is candida's enemy, so even with the fruit it's clearing up.

                10 strawberries
                1 bunch spinach
                1 cup water.

                  Today:
1 beautiful bunch of red dandelion greens
1 orange remove orange part of peel with knife, leave the white as it is high in calcium
                  1 mango
                  1/2 banana

The red dandy made it a bit bitter. But, I'm really growing to love that.
Dandelion seems like an obvious choice to me for health. It is less hybridized and as a weed has proven it's strength. There have actually been a couple books written about dandelion but I haven't read them. Apparently it was brought here and cultivated by Europeans. I use the red dandelion because I figure it is more bang for my buck.
Here is one article I found on the health benefits of dandelion.

                    dandelion greens are excellent
                    dandelion root tea is medicinal
and roasted dandelion root tastes great to drink -- kind of like coffee

                    and dandelions grow wild
and the name is even fun to say!

(i've never heard of 'red dandelion' though....)

I am hooked on green smoothies as well !!!

I add different things, depending on what sounds good to my body each day.

I have used avacados, apples, basil, garlic, tomatos, lemon or lime..... (though I either do sweet - greens + banana and apple or 1 or the other; or savory - greens + garlic and 1/2 a red onion. I haven't tried any of the recipes in the book, I just keep making up my own :) I haven't been disappointed yet!!

                        My favorite is
1 handfull of fresh organic spinnach
                        1 stalk celery (Optional)
1 or 2 sweet yellow filipino mangos
& enough water to blend into a smooth smoothy!

Yummy! Amazing this green smoothy revolution! Been raw for almost 4 years, and finally an insight that has virtually illuminated my craving to naughty stuff!

                          I have couple faves:

                          1 cup Orange-mango juice
A handful of sprouts (I've been using alfalfa-brocoli lately)
                          1Tsp Spirulina
a banana (optional, gives it a nice thickness and masks over the algae taste if you don't dig that)
                          Blend it together! YUM!

If you live in the tropics or have and exotic grocery nearby:

                          Papaya chunks
                          Pineapple chunks
1 nopal leaf (prickly pear cactus. You can usually find them in a mexican market)
                          A sprig of parsley
                          Apple chunks

Blend together with just enough water to make it blend. It's best first thing in the morning and is a really good cleanser!

Spring time is here so I'm cleansing now. At this point I am starting my day with two smoothies. Actually this sometimes takes me through til almost evening.
It is great to see a greater variety of local fruits coming around.
I have been really bummed about the twisty ties though. Good grief! I've got a mountain of them after one week. I go through 2-4 bunches of greens a day between my partner and I. This weekend I'm going to the farmers market so hopefully I can cut down on the twisty ties. And, of course all the other good reasons why farmers markets rock!

                      Current favorites:

Half a baby watermelon rind and all ( rawfood retreat centers start you out with watermelon juice with the rind each morning, supposed to be great for kidneys, it makes sense to me. )
                      half a pint of strawberries
                      1 bunch of spinach
                      2 cups water

half pint rasberries ( first local organic ones today, woo whoo! )
                      1 head romaine
                      2 cups water

                      1/2 pinapple
                      1/2 pint strawberries
                      1 bunch dino kale

Also, I've been adding ginger and spirulina to most of them.

ok well for those of us who aren't into the whole shopping, kitchen, and blender routine and want something easy,
i've been drinking supergreens revolution smoothies from sambazon
acai berries (twice the antioxidants of blueberries, tasty and really good 4 u)
                          grape juice
                          apple juice
                          bananas
                          mangoes
'super greens blend' - wheat grass, barley grass, oat grass, alfalfa, spirulina, chorella

i initally approached it warily, actually the truth is i got it because it was the last sambazon acai drink in the store a few weeks ago -- but its really good, it doesn't taste like an algae pond like some 'green' drinks, and now its my fave.

What kind of machinery do you use? Does a regular blender work? or do you have to get one of those big fancy machines (can't remember the name of it--Vita Blend, or something like that).

Yippee! I just tried it today. I walked a mile to my local Farmer's Market and got lots of green stuff and some fruits. Then I walked back up a very steep hill carrying my loot.

I washed them all and then tried 2 different combinations in my regular kitchen blender:

                                1) organic strawbs with beet tops and some spirulina and water, and

                                2) more strawbs, two very small peaches, some kale, and some parsley with a dropper of liquid ginger and water.

They were both pretty good! I can't wait til I've been doing this for awhile to see what happens--i.e., weight loss, better skin, more energy, etc.

actually, a 3 HP blender is best .. it blends MUCH faster than slower machines like 2hp's, meaning the food you put into the blender won't get hot and destroy enyzmes.

                                  Add ice?

                                  Wed, May 31, 2006 - 3:31 PM
After seeing the instructional video where they made soup right inside the vitamix with just friction, I started putting ice in the vitamix and my smoothies taste better and stay cold all morning as I sip at my desk. I've also found them to be more "drinkable" by adding water, I guess that just makes sense though. Who makes a 3HP blender? Do you think the ice nullifies friction heat and preserves enzymes? Can't tell myself but my smoothies are refreshing! I love carrying them to work and grossing out my office mates. They don't know what they're missing!

How long is everyone blending (w/ 2HP)? I like ~60 seconds to get them nice and smooth.

Thanks for the recipies guys! Here's one of my favs:

                                  1 Mango
                                  2 oranges
                                  5-6 med strawberries
                                  1/2 pint cherry tomatoes
XX leaves lacinato kale to taste
handful of ice and 1/2 cup water
                                  Enjoy! (~1.5 qts)

As to your question concerning blenders,a good 3hp blender that does not cost as much as the vita- mix is the waring MX-1000.It has simple hi/lo and pulse and spins at 30,000 rpm on high. You can get one at a good restaurant suply store,or online. This machine really screams!

I do add some spirulina. I figure it's been being used for hundreds of years by native americans so it has a pretty good reputation. Most of the other stuff that is made to sound so exotic in all those powders is found in a live active usable form in local fruits and veggies. Minerals, vitamins, amino acids, etc... are all abundant in the produce section, and cheaper!
I checked out the farmers market this weekend. It wasn't so great yet. I did get some amazing strawberries from a local farm that is well known for how good they treat their workers. That felt good. And, I got some of the first white peaches mmmmmmm.

                              Todays smoothie:
                              1 whole bunch green kale
                              1 pint strawberries
                              3 small peaches
                              2 cups water

I use a vitamixer! I finally bought one after looking at them for years and years. I use it everyday making smoothies and it makes such a huge difference in how they taste. It is easy to clean up and I LOVE it!

I really like beet greens, with some of the beets, and oranges, mmmmmmmmm. Peel just the orange part of the peel off with a knife because the white has lots of calcium.
Todays smoothie is a taste extravaganza!:
                                  2 inches of ginger
1 lime whole peel and all
                                  2 mangoes
                                  1 small red banana
                                  1 whole bunch of spinach

add the banana at the end...

I've been drinking green smoothies almost daily for the past couple of weeks. Romaine is good because it's a complete protein, but we've been making ours also with spinach. Mostly they have avocado, tomato, cucumber, spinach, a pinch of salt and even a bit of garlic sometimes. For a little kick there's jalapeno!

Try adding some herbs, too! I LOVE parsley--it's so healthy and cleansing. So yesterday's smoothie had spinach, kale, arugula, parsley, and basil. I added three very small peaches, the juice of half a lime, and a banana. It was really yummy!

Is there anything I should watch out for re. combining greens with fruits, or are greens a "neutral" food? I can't WAIT to try these!

I wonder this too, I just was reading this in Ann Wigmores book "recipes for longer life

"some basic guidelines are: eat fruits independant from vegetables. fruits and vegetables do not combine. when eatting fruits enjoy melons separately. Melons are broken down very rapidly, so enjoy them as a separate group. Leafy greens combine well with just about every other vegetable, and are aid to digestion."

she does go on to say though that "The best teacher of all, as always, is your own body. Your body can handle more extreme combinations, perhaps, than can another's."

but we are talking smoothies here where nutrients are assimilated with greater ease, requiring less stress fromour organs... i don't know

victoria boutenko argues that greens are not just a 'vegetable' but in a class of their own - if you combined fruits with starchy vegetables yes this is a bad combination, but like wigmore said greens are an aid to digestion and will not interfere with fruits. read green for life for the details.

my motto is always: listen to your own body and to your own taste.
personally, i can't even bear the THOUGHT of mixing vegetables with fruit, it's just not for me. on the other hand, in the past i didn't have any (digestive nor mental) problems mixing fruit with some other things, like cottage cheese, eating pancakes with baked fruit :), or dried fruits with meat, but usually i'd prefer to eat fruit separately, especially raw fruits.
nowadays i do throw flax seed or some olive oil in my smoothies, and don't notice any problems with that. but fruits and vegs, it's just my taste i guess.
some people can handle almost any combination, and others can't.

The changes in my body are amazing. I think the large amounts of ginger I'm adding are really kicking things into action.
I am going to get a scale so I can see how much I actually use.
Currently there are these beautiful dark green dandelion leaves with red steams at the store.
I bought a whole bunch for the next few days.
They are very bitter and even lots of oranges just makes them tolerable.
But bitter makes me feel so good. Maybe that's why I always craved chocolate, coffee, tea, etc....
So, it's a bitter greens week for me.

                    Today:
                    2 bunches red dandelion
                    6 oranges
                    1 pint strawberries
2 3inch long pieces of ginger
This makes about 3 quarts of thick smoothie that I drink through out the day. Then in the evening I eat whatever I want. But, my cravings for stuff that makes me feel bad are going away.

i just had a great ephiphany the other day. i had been throwing my broccoli stalks away and felt bad about spending $2.30 a pound then using only like 10% of the vegetable - the flowerets plus a little stem - in my salad. and i finally realized hey, i could put the stalk in my smoothie !!!

I'm getting lots of compliments on how great I look! A friend of 25 years said that everybody is aging but me. Then we were at a raw foods restaurant, Cafe Gratitude in Berkeley, and a woman at our table who I'd never met told me I must be eating that way all the time because I look just fabulous. That afternoon, I went to the eye doctor and a woman in the waiting room told me I look fabulous. My boss told me I look great today, too! Yippee!

However, my cravings have not gone away and I swear my fingernails are weaker than they were before which was VERY bad before. They peel off below the quick and it hurts so bad that it wakes me up at night! I have to take 6 gelatin capsules a day just keep fingernails at all! Any suggestions? I take Super Nutrition vitamins.

Maybe add more ingredients that are high in silicone and sulphur like arugula and cucumbers....
And, maybe reconsider the gelatin. It maybe doing you more harm than good...?
How about silica supplements instead? Also, add more ginger if you can. It helps increase your absorption
of whatever you take it with.

Thanks, Tasha. I'll try adding more ginger. I LOVE ginger! As for the silicone, I've tried that and it didn't do anything for me. I know the gelatin is working because whenever I miss a day or two, I lose a chunk of my thumbnails. I haven't tried cukes yet, but I did big batches of arugula. It's not my favorite because of the bitterness, altho I'm more into supporting my health and energy than pleasing my tastebuds.

I have it growing in my yard and I know it's real good for you.

i blended stinging nettle raw in green juices and it was fine. very tasty. it adds a super cleansing burst to the drink.
the young light green small nettles are best though. once theyre big and old theyre bitter and probabally not as good in the way of nutrients.
theyre past now in england, im sure its different wherever you are though.

Summer has me crazy busy! Good to hear people are still blending away.
Can't wait to try stinging nettle. Kinda scarey and exciting!
Green smoothies are keeping me going. Without them I would not be able to be doing all the great stuff I have to do
this summer, without falling apart. It is so fast and easy that I can maintain the routine without a problem.
I put whole bunches of greens stems and all! Go Vitamixer! Vvvrrrooom vroom!
These days it's a quickie recipe for me. Easy stocking the fridge and less trips to the store.

                Ginger
3 oranges peel the orange outside off leave the white
                spirulina
one bunch greens, stems and all
                2-3 cups water.

I make and drink two of these a day. My boyfriend drinks one. I feel it when I miss them because of travel. Then, I can't wait to get home for smoothie love!

Woohoo! I went last night, and the health food store was opened for five more minutes, so I scooped up a whole bunch of organic produce. My question before I start blending, what's a "bunch"? of kale? Is it like 3-4 pieces or like 30?
      • Re: Green Smoothie Revolution!

        Wed, July 26, 2006 - 4:35 PM
When I say a "bunch, " I mean the whole thing you buy in the store with the wire band around it, i.e., a bunch of parsley. Otherwise, I might say a "handful."

I wouldn't use a bunch of kale, though. It would be too much. Three or four leaves is enough when it comes to kale or any other leaf that hefty. I frequently use collard leaves--2 or 3 at a time.

I don't know what others mean when they say "bunch."
        • Re: Green Smoothie Revolution!

          Wed, July 26, 2006 - 9:14 PM
Oh yeah, I think I over kaled and collarded it a bit this time -- it wasn't quite as tasty as I'd hoped, but it did feel AMAZING in my body. I went kind of nuts -- frozen grapes, frozen banana, half lemon, some mango, ginger, carrot, strawberries, kale and collards. Wow did that FEEL good. Tomorrow, fewer ingredients all around, a little less green overall. BTW, there were also some really good recipes on Nature's First Law.
        • Re: Green Smoothie Revolution!

          Thu, July 27, 2006 - 11:07 AM
i do entire bunches of kale and collards and it's not too much for me. i worked up to there from smaller amounts though, and when i put in an entire bunch it makes enough for two people (close to 40 ozs)
          • Re: Green Smoothie Revolution!

            Thu, July 27, 2006 - 2:27 PM
I guess the thing is, it came out kind of chewy with all the kale and collards I put in and I wasn't quite expecting that. It kind of messed up the mouth feel for me. But like I said, it still felt pretty good.

Anybody into "chewing" their juice? I think this is to get the enzyme production started?

    Today's blend:

    1 banana

    1/4 canteloupe
mixed organic greens (red cos, tango, wild rocket, romaine, red chard)
    1/2 green pepper
    1 stalk celery

the dark green smoothie thing has been much on my mind lately so i am glad stumble across link. give me a bit of time and i'll get through all the post.

the reason i am thinking green is that green indicates a high level of chlorophyll and probably a high enzyme content (am i right!). chlorophyll bening close to the constituents of human blood, call it green blood, and is quickly absorbed into the blood stream.

i am also on a mental buzz about enzymes providing a missing link to our processed food diets. whats the point in consuming nutrients without enzymes (the bodies labour force) to make them effective? smoothies tackle te problem by the balls.

tasha. i read you mix dark green veg withs fruit ie strawberry and spinach (wow). my uneducated gut response is that they do not mix. i have gone cold turkey regarding drinking dark green juice strait, and have been drinking it for about 10 days. the tast is turning me off, so perhaps adding some fruit may be the answer. can you give some info on mixing dark greens with friut.

    regards

OK, so reading thru the posts and some victoria B information, it seems the rule of thumb (being completely new to green smoothies) for mixing veg and fruit is basically anything goes! throw all into a blender and press the button...just do not mix friut with starchy veg. do you second this?

i do find that mixing certain kinds of fruits with greens do not sit well with me.
i like using pear, lemon, dark greens and water.
my untimate fav is apple, 4-6 brazils (depending on size), dark greens and water.
this not only tastes great, but sustains me. i do not feel "full", just perfectly sustained, strong, energized, and i am sharp as a tack. this one keeps me going for hours during a physically demanding job.

Hi! It's my first post here but i've been reading for a while ;)
I'm French and I started the amazing green smoothies one week ago... so good! ! ! (especially Victoria's weird combination of celery and kiwi or mango and parsley)
Today, I made my own, I was a little tense, but it turned out good ! I hope to increase the amount of greens soon ...

    Anyway, here it is :

    1 handful arugula
1 big handful green lettuce of choice
    1 banana
    1 peach
    3 or 4 small apricots
    2 cups water

i thought it was a bad idea when i first read it, but decided to try it anyway. I did fresh apple juice, mango, strawberry, banana, beet greens (about 5 small leaves) and a few soaked cashews. It looked like vomit, smelled really bizarre, but tasted AMAZING. Even my 7 year old liked it, and we fought over the rest. Thank you!!!!
