How have your periods changed, aside from no more cramps. Mine is two weeks late, but I'm not preggo. Has anyone lost theirs entirely? What's up with that? I don't bleed that much anyway... Just curious what other women are experiencing since it's hard to know what is "normal" on raw sometimes living in this cooked world.

Your body is cleansing, give it time :) -

Re: Raw Period
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 9:13 PMHow little body fat do you have? I'm not sure what the exact percentage is, but when it gets too low, the body will shut down the fertility cycle because pregnancy cannot be supported. It happens to dancers and athletes. -

Re: Raw Period
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 7:48 PMI was on a Full Moon cycle for a long time, after drifting to that of my co-workers from my original New Moon cycle. Then last June i went 100% raw, cold turkey, and my period shifted by two weeks to a New Moon cycle. I thought that was proper, since i have always identified with the New Moon menstrual cycle as the one that reflects the most harmony with the lunar phase itself--fertile at the full moon, emptying at the new moon. Once i was eating the foods Gaia intended for me to eat, i synched up with the moon in a resonant way.
I have no idea why a dramatic dietary change affects the menstrual cycle. I think it's too simplistic to just chalk everything up to "detox", it's becoming the catch-all excuse that answers all manner of raw diet questions. My menstrual cycle gets disturbed whenever i change residence, go on a trip for longer than a week, or endure extreme stress for more than a few days....so it's not surprising to me. I just don't know the chemistry or physiology behind it. Any naturopaths in the house? -

Re: Raw Period
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 4:49 PMi went from life long vegi to vegan and then went 100% raw vegan for 4 months followed by 85-90% raw for another 4 months .
I stopped bleeding after 1 month of being raw and didnt bleed again for a year.which came after a month or so of craving and eating alot of fish which i was never one to eat before all this.
My body weight never got as low as when i was just a normal vegi .and interestingly enough when i did start bleeding again i was on a new moon cycle for 2 months followed 6 months of bleeding on both the full and new moons for an average for 2 days .
I personally think that the full spectrum of external and internal relationships one is experiencing at any given time is at play here.
such delicate alchemistry sets are we..
thats my story..

I know that in TCM they have a term called "blood deficient" which can result from a diet low in assimilated protein. Animal protein like fish is one of the easiest protein for our body to take in, because it is already like us. Proper food combining is very important in a pure vegan diet. Spinach and other high Iron items are good to include. Maybe a mineral supplement. -

Re: Raw Period
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 11:24 AMI was all over the vitamineral greens , bluegreen algea, spirulina, maca, cacao, tocos ....and drinking at least a quart of very dark green juice everyday..and i was all about the super dark bitter fruits acai, raspberry, blueberry . i was working at a raw juice bar so i was always talking and practicing propper food combining and the subsequent nutrient absorbtion.. it was actually kinda rediculous...
in the end what i figured was it was
a. i went deep into detoxing
b.during this time i was only getting vegi/fruit proteins, as whenever i tried t eat nuts they made me sicki poopoo
c.i was eating maca everyday, which deffinitely tinkers with your horomone levels.
d. I was living and working 50+hrs a week in NYC ...which is not a great place to be a long term raw foodist...
another interesting thing which ive speculated on alot but never quite figured out was that in about month 6 of being raw my hands and feet started to have an orange tinge to them...and no i wasnt eating alot of carrots or tomatoes. -

Re: Raw Period
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 1:47 PMall those greens are very high in beta-carotene. It doesn't just have to come from carrots. Check this out:
.........................................................................................................................................................
Toxicity Symptoms
What are toxicity symptoms for beta-carotene?
A tell-tale sign of excessive consumption of beta-carotene is a yellowish discoloration of the skin, most often occurring in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. This condition is called carotenodermia, and is reversible and harmless.
High intake of carotenoid-containing foods or supplements is not associated with any toxic side effects. As a result, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences did not establish a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for carotenoids when it reviewed these compounds in 2000.
However, the results of two research studies indicate that those who smoke heavily and drink alcohol regularly, may increase their chance of developing lung cancer and/or heart disease if they take beta-carotene supplements in amounts greater than 20-30 milligrams per day.
................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Very interesting point you make about NYC not being the ideal place for a long-term raw foodist. I would imagine that an excess of Vata Dosha would make it very hard to function in such a Rajasic place as New York.
Sorry to deviate from the original post, but i found what Chelsea posted too intriguing not to comment... -

Re: Raw Period
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 11:17 PMbingo.
and actually a beta-carotene o.d. was one of the many random diagnoses that got thrown around at the cafe . but now that i see this all those other possibilities seem obsurd some funny even.
but to be a good triber and get back to the topic . i pulled an encyclopedia of healing remedies off my book shelf and started looking up possible defficiencies that could lead to long term loss of period. to name a few that i had other symptoms for zinc , b6, and then chinese medicine comes in with the very intuitive answer that really hit home which is , loss of period is caused by cooling of the blood .
but we are all different. -

Re: Raw Period
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 10:49 PMWell, I went into a fear mode instead of listening to my body, and took some cohosh a few times. It made me feel like crap the next day but I started my period. In retrospect I wouldn't do that again. I think my body was just sorting itself out and I was worried about pregnancy so wasn't patient. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experiences. I guess I'll see what happens next month. -

Re: Raw Period
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:28 PMI lost mine too and I am here searching out the same Q.... at least you know I am in the same boat! I am very thin.... but I am not worried because readings I have read by Gandhi and David Wolfe talk about eating less helping gain heightened spirituality. also, i just read somewhere that when you lose your period, the aging process stops! what have you read on it, anything else? -

Re: Raw Period
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 8:52 AMI dunno, I've met some real skinny people who seemed to be spiritually vacant. And most women, albeit who do not understand how to live healthy, age a lot from menopause. -

Re: Raw Period
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 12:04 AMyes, i think that points to the difference between someone who is thin because of diet pills, mainstream "south beach" diets that include a lot of animal foods, or because of drug use....and someone who is thin because they are giving their body only the whole food vital nutrients that it requires to sustain the physical organism. With an unhealthy mentality, both could border on starvation.
I still think that your moon cycle will resume once you find your rhythm with the proper diet for your physique and metabolism. I was once told by a naturopath that if you get a blue light and leave it on in your room at night for three nights around the full moon, it will create a rhythm for your period to follow...kind of like a pacemaker. You could do the same thing by making a point to go outside and moonbathe on the night of the full moon, and do some other sort of ritual to acknowledge the new moon as well. Sometimes i forget that not everything results from or can be fixed by diet alone, we have to stay in touch with the forces of nature in our world too.

Re: Raw Period
Yesterday, 3:03 PMWith all due respect, there are far more reasons than those two why someone is very skinny. There's a lady in my 'hood who's past 80, skinny as a rail, and usually wearing an expression like she's just sucked a lemon. I doubt she'd spend an extra penny on organic food.
And the idea that you need to sleep under a particular colored light, I'd file that under "false gods". Perhaps a little more mindful attention to one's cycle and related physical activity would be more proactive.
