if anyone could give me some insights from their experience i would be grateful.(i am grateful anyways :) )

i'd never heard of the Good4u brand. Cheaper than Excalibur and yeah the door is kind of a pain in the ass with the Excalibur. But, as you mention, if you wanted to make yogurt or something else that you wouldn't put on a tray, you'd have no way of closing the front on the Good4u. I love my Excalibur, wish i'd sprung for the one with the timer, but one of these days i'll get around to buying a plug-in timer thingy at the hardware store because it would be very helpful to have the thing shut off when you want it to. The Good4u appears to come with a built-in timer and if i'd known about this brand before, i might have gotten it just for the timer.

What else would you dehydrate in a bowl besides yogurt?

Whatever you do, make sure you get enough non-stick liners. They come in really handy for sticky stuff and itty bitty stuff like granola, and definitely for fruit leathers.

can you rig the excalibur to shut off by itself with items from a hardware store? that is surely somethng i am interested in. how is it done?

if a 9 tray is being used, there should be plenty of room for a bowl. you just take the trays out as you would with any other recipe.

foods may be warmed in a bowl in the dehydrator. i used to do this with raw chiili. you just need to keep stirring it. recipes for things such as kashi ask for a glass dish in which the sprouted oat groats are placed.

a friend of mine had used my excalibur and researched many other brands including good4you. he ordered himself an excalibur and is pleased with decision to do so. i do not recall the reason he did not go with the good4you, but i can try and find out.

I would think any light timers would serve as a shut-off for the Excalibur.

PJ i think it was because the Good4U has no door that it would not work for heating things up in a bowl--the trays themselves for the door so you have to keep them all in place. It's a good idea, but a limiting design if you want to do more than tray drying.

and yes, i've been told that you can use a basic plug-in timer from the hardware store. I will get one of these before summertime.

Thanks for reminding me about heating stuff up, and about chili. I have yet to make raw chili, one of the many recipes on my list to try. I've become so habitual with my green smoothies, i hardly ever prepare meals anymore.

You are correct Madame7. He did prefer the full door.

When I was doing a lot of tray drying, I would not always have all 5 trays in place. I would only use those necessary. In that case a full door is also needed.

Apparently, from what I read online, the Good4You company is making a spacer of some kind which will allow one to not use all of the trays each time. Until that is available, another user suggested using silver foil to cover the space, which apparently worked fine.

I don't know about the good4you, but I absolutely love my Excalibur, I've been using it for about one year, and it is really nice to have it be front loading, and have the option of thicker foods, as well as yogurts.

I'm completely happy with my Excalibur, too. I'm running it right now full of kale chips and sweet potato chips. I have the 5-tray, though, and do sort of wish I had the 9-tray for putting bowls of stuff in there. I live alone, and it really has not been a problem, because I don't make large quantities of food.
