How have your periods changed, aside from no more cramps. Mine is two weeks late, but I'm not preggo. Has anyone lost theirs entirely? What's up with that? I don't bleed that much anyway... Just curious what other women are experiencing since it's hard to know what is "normal" on raw sometimes living in this cooked world.

Transitioning Advice?!

Hello!! I'm new to raw foods and in the transition phase. I am reading a lot about it and was hoping people here could enlighten me with your advice and experience..... Any and all help is appreciated!!! Also.... I'm finding the impliments needed to be a little expensive and was wondering if anyone could suggest things to do w/out buying everything before I'm ready.....

I guess my questions are this...

is it best to transition slowly or go raw right away???
are there things i can do during my transition (rejuvalac, acidophilus, etc.) and how much of these should i take?
how long can i eat comfortably w/out purchasing implements (dehydrator, etc.)

thank you :)

i must bring it up. after being raw off and on for a while now, i noticed my stools are green. now in addition, my parents noted that my skin is yellow, proceeded to freak out and freak me out a bit, and asked if my stools are white (no!) however i wonder if anyone else has read up on or experienced green stools, or yellow skin?

Agave and sustainability

Does anyone have accurate information from the inside of Agave Nectar production?
From what i've read, the plants are harvested and their big hearts cut out to get the sap out, which would effectively kill the plant. Given the explosive popularity of this sweetener, and the fact that it's now available in Trader Joes (and probably soon in mainstream markets), i have bot concerns and doubts about its sustainability.

My friend disbelieves that most agave nectar is pure. He doesn't think it's possible that there are enough agave plants in America to produce such an enormous quantity of nectar. I'm inclined to believe what i read on labels, naive as that may be, but i also suspect something fishy is going on.

I would love to hear from anyone who knows someone in the agave business, or anyone who has visited an agave farm, or otherwise has personal knowledge of how it's produced and distributed in the US.

thanks!

There are three raw chef judges in a raw food preparation competition, each judging the same plate the following way:

First judge: "This is not raw. I call it like I taste it"

Second judge: "This is not raw. I call it as it IS"

Third judge: "This is not raw: There is nothing.. and NOTHING..'till I say it is"

if you are given a plate, how would you judged it?

I manage a raw foods cafe on Maui. We are looking for a new web designer. It would be great to have someone from the raw foods community. If you fit this description, please drop me a line.

Ideally we are also looking for a graphic designer too - so if you do both - that's even better.

allright, I wanna hear from you folks that regularly make green smoothies. I have pretty much the same thing, with a rotation of greens. looking for some inspiration, some exciting new recipes. Who pushes beyond the "fruit + greens = smoothie" formula? share share share!!!

here is my regular morning thing.

1 avocado
1-2 pieces of fruit ( apple or pear)
ginger
fresh nutmeg
whole bunch of parsley,
half head of romaine (or other greens) usually as much as I can get in the blender
maybe some maca or bee pollen
celtic sea salt
water

your turn!

Raw Noob

Ok, for years I've ripped on vegans, raw foodists, etc. I love a good steak and I'm not going into raw foods for any reasons having to do with any kind of morality. I've shunned the whole idea of raw foods for a long time.
For some reason I started looking into it. I stumbled into a video on youtube which was a trailer for an upcoming movie called Raw For 30 Days.
Well, my family has a history of diabetes and heart disease. I am 250lbs when I should be 165. I have a very low libido since I've gained weight, and I used to be skinny, hot and, um "active". Now, I'm very sedentary. I have bad circulation and my feet and calves are often puffy and shiny. Not good.

So, I'm looking for advice about transitioning into raw foods because I know if I just go all out right away I'll give up. I want to make a permanent change, not have another "diet". Any help or directions to good resources would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to find out exactly what I can and can't eat and would like to find a way to do this without having to do a lot of weighing, counting, measuring, etc. Is there a low maintenance way to do this?

I wanna look good for my first Burning Man this year!

I am not 100% raw, but I really try to incorporate a large part of raw/living foods in my diet. I'm anemic, and am told that there's not many vegetarian let alone raw sources for iron. I bought some black strap molasses for a start. I already eat a lot of dark green leafy veggies. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I am trying to transition back to 100% raw. The hardest thing for me is that my husband thinks that being fully raw is some sort of eating disorder. Most of all it makes him feel uncomfortable eating cooked food around me.

Any suggestions?

He's not a big reader - I've tried referring him to books.
I've tried the arguments.
I've tried attraction rather than promotion.

He gets that eating some raw foods is good, but thinks that being a "raw foodist" is extremism.

I would appreciate any experience you may have.

The more vegestables I eat, the more I seem to .... potpourri.

My biggest discomfort is the bloading gut.. very uncomfortable.

Is there any happy bacteria to intake for raw diets.

I wonder if gas-X and such are safe.. i see them as medication that I am generally adverse to taking.

Shivering on raw food

Sometime ago, I was fully on a raw food diet for four months before it got derailed by having to sit in a courtroom for six weeks and go to lunch in restaurants with my group all that time. For the four months, I was mostly using Gabriel Cousins' Rainbow Foods number I regimen except I was eating apples. During and after court, cooked food caused many cravings and I just never have gotten back on raw food 100% yet.

Anyway, the worst thing I found about the raw vegan diet was that I was shivering every night in my bed during the summer. Granted, it's not all that warm in the Bay Area, but it's not cold, either. I simply could not get warm no matter what I did. I felt like my insides were shivering. That made it difficult to sleep. It has sort of become a deterrent to getting fully back on raw food for me. I'm moving back in that direction, though. I believe it's the healthiest diet one can have. Now I'm eating a minimum of two raw meals a day and sometimes I go two days fully raw.

Someone told me that shivering is a detox symptom and that it goes away after awhile. Does anyone know about this? I am trying to add cayenne pepper to many dishes now to prevent the shivering. We'll see what happens when I go 100% which will happen once I finish a very few items in my kitchen that are not raw.

transitioning cats to raw meats/fish?

they are kittens...about 10-12 weeks old... the vet told me that if i want to prepare their food myself i should cook the meats rather than give them to them raw. but i have heard that raw foods do great things for animals. and i want them to get the full nutritional benefit of the foods they are eating. i am thinking that i might still cook certain foods for them to soften them up.... for example broccoli, carrots, might feed them some cooked brown rice.... etc. what other foods would you reccommend for my kitties? ive heard about raw eggs, raw wheat germ, bone meal, bee pollen, cooked millet, oats, greens, and even seaweeds. does anyone prepare their kitties food by hand, and if so what do you prepare? how would you reccommend going about the transition onto a whole food diet?

newly raw and a couple of questions

hey all...i made the transition to raw foods a little over a week ago and i already believe its the best decision ive made. i do have a couple of questions though, and i appreciate any input.

first of all- fats. ive been eating very high-fat since i went raw. avocados, coconut, extra virgin coconut oil, olives, raw nuts and nut butters. should i refrain from too high of an intake of fat, even with raw foods? what is a good amount to consume on a daily basis....and will i gain weight from the intake of these healthier fats?

secondly, sugars. i am craving them in excess. have mostly been eating fruit and limiting my intake of sweetners (i only use agave and raw honey) but today for instance i ate almost an entire pineapple, boatloads of kiwi, and fresh mango to top it all off. should i limit my intake of sugars as well...and if so, how much?

lastly, i have talked to a few raw foodists who claim you can eat as much as you want when on a raw diet. since i went raw ive been eating a lot... perhaps cravings to compensate for what ive cut out... but i dont know if i believe its safe to over-eat on any kind of food at all. what is your input on this?

Rainbow Green Experiences and Menus?

just wondering if any of you have had success with Gabriel Cousen's Rainbow Green diet. . .
one thing i don't quite understand is how to get enough calories when you're eating minimal to no sweet fruit and "only as much fat as one avocado per day," which i was advised by a graduate of Gabriel's Spiritual Nutrition program. A sample daily menu that meets daily calorie requirements (I'm guessing at the very least 1500 calories per day?) would be helpful.
Thank you!
love Ezekiel

Latest "Healthy" Soda Swindle -- Pepsi Raw

Latest "Healthy" Soda Swindle -- Pepsi Raw

pepsico, pepsi, diet pepsi, pepsi raw, healthy soda, soda, sugarPepsi has created a new, supposedly healthier version of their brand of flavored sugar water, called Pepsi Raw.

Regular Pepsi contains ingredients such as fructose corn syrup, sugar, artificial colors, phosphoric acid, caffeine and citric acid.

Pepsi Raw, in comparison, uses ingredients like apple extract, caramel coloring, coffee leaf, tantaric acid from grapes, gum arabic from acacia trees, cane sugar and sparkling water. It has very slightly fewer calories -- about 10 calories less in a 300ml bottle.

For the moment, Pepsi Raw is only being served in select bars and clubs in parts of England, but a wider rollout is expected later this year.

Living food potluck

Hey recently relocated back to the east bay area, and have touched base with several other friends in the area who lean towards a predominately living foods diet and we all thought it would be alot of fun and good support to get a group of us together once a month or so.. I myself have been on the living foods path since 1998, officially becoming a living food gourmet chef in 99 (through Victoria Boutenko's Raw Food Gourmet classes offered in Ashland , Or at that time),, and currently eat mostly living foods.. I do throw my body a 'bone' once in a while in the form of some yummy cooked thai food, or indian curry.. or a chai tea... but this is a rare occasion , and usually has to do with being social .... I tend to eat very simple, existing on mostly fruit, young coconuts, seeds, sprouted nuts, raw nut butters and deep green leafy veges.... I do incorporate some superfoods, and sprouts but have eased off quite a bit in the last few years... eating a mostly fruitarian style seems to be enough for my body,,, I am also way into the practice of Raja yoga, and would be into incorporating that into the gatherings if others were interested... if not , just a living foods potluck would be loads of fun!!!.. Any1 in the bay area who is interested, or knows of something like this already happenin let me know...

Raw Wine..

I have noticed that people sometimes talk about raw wine. To me it sounds like a false statement because I would have thought that even though organic products are used, they would still need to pasteurize it or process it some other way.

In my favorite raw cook book, Raw Food Real World, they have a chapter for cocktails. They are using:

* sake (admitting it is produced from steamed rice)
* sparkling wine
* still wine

I don't drink much or often but I do like to have a glass of wine at a dinner party, so I would love to be able to have a cocktail now and then but I don't know what wine is raw (answers appreciated)

When I went to the Pure Food and Wine restaurant in NY a year ago I forgot to try out one of the cocktails, but I will surely try one now in April. I will tell you all about how good-strange-bad or whatever it will taste like ;)

So do you now if the raw wine is RAW?
Can you point me to the manufacturers name?
Do you make a great cocktail that is raw - share the recipe :)

Does anyone have any experience with spiral slicers? The ones I found online seem to break down into 2 categories, basic and expensive. The basic ones run around $30-$50 and the fancy ones upwards of $300.

Just wondering if anyone has recommendations for the "basic" range of slicers?

GREAT book!!! Not only do you get to see the diet of a long-time raw vegan & professional dancer/athlete, but you get insights, nutritional data, recipes, and more. Great stuff!

You can get it from Tonya's web-site.

Hydraulic juicing to avoid heating the juice

Gee I'm surprised no one at this tribe devoted to raw food has talked about the fact that the spinning blade used by most juicers HEATS the juice as it is being made, killing enzymes and arguably making the juice "not raw."

I went ahead and bought a Norwalk hydraulic juicer (ridiculously expensive - as discussed on the Norwalk Juicer tribe) -- http://tribes.tribe.net/norwalkjuicer -- which IF USED CAREFULLY does not heat the vegetables and fruits in the process of juicing.

It's costly to buy that machine but I believe I'm much better off with it in terms of getting juice that is truly raw.

14 day Lifefood Nutritional and Liver Cleanse Blog

reposting my blog here so it can be of use to all us cleansers! if you respond here i may not answer, but if you message me personally on tribe as well, i'll get the message. thanks!

Aloha Friends and Family,

I am a Cleansing Superhero!

I am currently on day 10 of the Jubbs 14 day Lifefood Nutritional Fast. This is an intensive cleanse that I have done once before about 2 years ago full-length and one 5 day version last spring. This is a cellular rejuvenation cleanse focusing on the upstream. Upstream cleansing is above the diaphram (liver and gallbladder). It is important to get the liver and gallbladder, the main sewage plant cleared before trying to achieve a lasting colon cleanse. if you cleanse the colon first, it won't last because the toxified organs up the digestive stream just help to create more of the problem conditions in the colon.

The cleanse involves eating only Lifefood blended into soups, smoothies, drinks, and drinking some medicinal teas. Wearing castor oil packs on liver/gallbladder and ascending, transverse, and descending colon 2 times a day. Drinking apple cider vinegar 4 times a day. Eating powdered wildcrafted vital herbal formulas on slices of fruit (to activate them with parotid hormone in saliva for better digestion.) 3 days of liver/gallbladder flushing by drinking 4-6 oz of olive oil and 4 oz of lemon juice wtih coffee enema after.

I have been studying to become a certified Phoenix Fastician with Dr. David Jubb, PhD in new york and have been learning lots about this cleanse, the herbs, and how to read a person like a book in a health reading with cleanse and nutritional support. This is a True Healing Theraputic. There are many cleanses out there, but most miss the boat in some respect. Most don't look much to optimum nutrition during the cleanse and just offer suppliments to take. Most don't focus on the most important organ, the general, the most overworked and over toxified Liver. The Jubbs Cleanse takes care of all that. Because of the amazing nutrition, you are gently supported instead of stripped down like many cleanses like the Master Cleanse. If you're already in optimal health that might be ok, but most of us need the gentle support. It can be devistating to water fast or master cleanse to those with weakened immune systems.

So now that I've studied a bit with the Dr., it's amazing to see how much improvement is showing in my cleanse since last time. I feel like a rock star of cleansers! I've been able to be much more positive in my outlook, enjoying the cleanse much more. The hightened clarity i've received is such a gift. On the 5-day one i did last spring and definitly on this one, I am understanding my body's messages so quickly and clearly. The ones I'm getting big time are that my colon is sluggish and to never eat late at night. I ate late at night one night and paid for it with more outbreak of hives and feeling kind of groggy and slightly hungover. it all makes sense now. don't fill up your system with food and make it work while you're trying to rest at night! it's a total aggrivation to the system and makes symptoms worse!

I've also learned to fine-tune the cleanse with kundalini yoga, and sound healing with gong, tuning forks, & singing bowls. I'm also committing to percussion to the liver and gallbladder and massage of the gallbladder and colon. this was instrumental to a productive harvest of nasty little gall stones and some disgusting intestinal mucus. if you're brave and want to look at the pics, here's a link. www.flickr.com/photos/663...3715299990/

this cleanse has really offered me a chance to organize and discover the power of making all your own super nutrition food at home. with lifefood (raw food without hybrids like carrots, beets, bananas, corn, dates, legumes, grains) it's all about organization. i'm going to make cheat sheets to hang in the kitchen for things like timing of doses, reminders to soak nuts/seeds for milking, timing of cracker dehydration, etc. i'm so grateful to have found my new little hobbit healing temple. i have my own place wich means my own kitchen and bathroom. i have been wanting this for a while now so that i can do this cleansing and heal up old health issues. to my abounding health!

It's amazing how the body, mind, emotions, and spirit are linked! When I'm flushing out the stones and feeling kind of queezy all kind of crummy emotions come up. sometimes i will literally detox something out. last time i detoxed out the "wheel of fortune" theme song! it just looped over and over in my head till a shaman kitty came and massaged it out of my colon when i did the 5-day at Eden Hot Springs last summer. This time i have been working through feelings if incapability and insecurity as well as fear of death. also, on day 3, while feeling fiesty and superpowered, i received a call that brought an opportunity to test my spirituality, courage, and compassion. it all went well, i made a new friend, and helped to empower a sister going through a hard time! Jah works in gloriously mysterious ways always in perfect time!

all in all, the cleanse has been a wonderful boost to my energy, health, self-esteem, courage, discipline, willpower, flow and clarity of communication, inspiration, motivation, and intuition. I have realized that i am indeed making room for the light in my life by clearing out the toxins. all the emotions that are coming up represent the old me that clings (literally) to my insides making me sick. It's so refreshing to look in the toilet and poke around at my shit, literally and figuratively! Don't think for a second that all that crud coming out doesn't have an emotional, psychic, and spiritual component. the chinese know what they're talking about. supprisingly, i haven't dealt with too much anger this cleanse, wich is what the liver is connected with. some minor frustrations, that's all. i stand by my theory that it doesn't matter which comes first the chicken or the egg. that is to say, cleanse either your mind, emotions, spirit, physical body, and the rest will naturally catch the momentum of the first. just do it and get the ball rolling. gotta start somewhere!

if you have questions or would like to do this cleanse, please let me know. i am glad to be of service as i have time. it is good for me as a phoenix fastician in training to field some questions.

Learn more by buying these two books. the first is a recipe book with recipies for the cleanse that goes over an older version of the cleanse (still powerful and no buying of herb formulas.) the second is a scientific book with info on blood formation, cellular rejuvenation, powerful therapies nobody talks about, the underlying cause of dis-ease. it has an updated super-powered version of the cleanse.

everybody tells me that nobody really knows the reason for morning sickness.

i'm wondering if part of what it's all about is detox. if so, it would stand to reason that raw foodists eating raw/live/organic foods would experience a lot less of that misery than people living on the standard american diet. what was your experience?

also, what foods worked well for you during pregnancy?

Hello everyone,

I am a raw newbie and have a questions about raw sweeteners - what do you use? Agave seems to be the sweetener of choice, but I realized that perhaps the agave I just bought a the store is not really raw.

I also love to use maple syrup, and am open to using black strap molasses.

Besides knowing which sweeteners to use, my question is how do you know it is raw?

Thanks for your advise,

Amulya with a sweet tooth!

Under Codex all nutrients and herbs are labelled as toxic and will be illegal.(as illegal as heroin) Canada is required to comply with codex by DEC.31 2009

I am very concerned about Codex and the implications it can have on our Canadians rights and freedom. Under Codex all nutrients and herbs are labelled as toxic and will be illegal.(as illegal as heroin) Canada is required to comply with codex by DEC.31 2009 or the WTO which implements Codex will put up trade sanctions against Canada. We must not let Codex get implemented. We need to start sending letters and getting petitions signed NOW to stop Codexs standards from being implemented here in Canada and the rest of the world. I have added a Video which outlines what we must do to stop codex. Please Help and get the Canadian public to be aware of Codex and the horrible implications it could have on our lives.

http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-5266884912495233634&q=health&total=122451&start=0num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

Please watch this video it will inform you of exactly what Codex is and what it is trying to do and how we can fight it.

Again, we must stop this now before it's to late and our human rights to take nutritional supplements and herbs is taken away and our right to hormone free meat and milk and organic vegetables is taken away.

I need your help all Canadians need your help. Inform the Canadian Public about Codex and get the petitions started to stop them.

Sincerely,
Brittany

Do you eat it? If so, what is miso and brand of choice, please? Other than a dash of nama shoyu here and there, I avoid soy. I can feel negative effects physically. I know there are other misos such as chick pea with no soy. I have no problem with this, but the chick peas are cooked before the miso fement takes place, I believe.

Has anyone made it before? What is the variation of taste between the whole grains? I found organic whole grains which were for the most part, unprocessed. (they were hulled and that was it) I bought Spelt, Soft Whole Wheat, Rye & Barley.

What are your experiences with making this and did you notice any positive effect on your body?

Here are two websites I found, the first says how to make it and the second is where I purchased the grain from.
http://www.hishealingways.com/rejuvelac/makerejuvelac.html
http://www.healthybuyersclub.com/productdisplay.cfm?c1=Organic%20Food&sc1=Organic%20Whole%20Grains (everything here was available in 5 lb bags for a very reasonable price)

what happens to you when you fall off the wagon? (and how do you get back on?)

This is the second month in a row that PMS knocked me off the wagon. I got cold, I got weak, stressed out, i cheated, i cheated some more, ate a lot of sugar....and then some bread, thai food,...more sugar, and totally threw in the towel for a few days. Now i find myself missing those days when i felt so clear and free of anxiety, my life seemed to go more smoothly, i didn't worry about stuff. I know i'm not so far away from that...i just need a few days to transition myself back to raw and overcoming the sugar and starch cravings is the hardest part. I may be exaggerating but right now it feels like my whole life falls apart when i return to my old way of eating.

How about the rest of you? What are the "symptoms" you notice most prominently when you slip back to the dark side? And what kind of Jedi maneuvers do you employ to get back into the light?

Ok, this is sort of gross but I have to ask. Today is day 21 of a raw vegan diet. I feel pretty good. I had some great days and some not so great ones but now I am worried about something. I have had 2 episodes on 2 seperate days of bleeding from my rectum. I know, this is gross but I was wondering if the diet might be associated with this problem. Nothing hurts. No straining or problems in that area. Just a moderate amount of blood in the toliet. Anyone?

raw diet and immune system

Ok, so i went 100% raw in the middle of June 2007. I felt awesome all summer and into the fall, but i noticed in September that i was extremely, uncomfortably cold. I was chilled in June as well, but i really noticed it when the weather changed here. I got my first cold in over 18 months at the beginning of September. By the end of October i'd had cold #2, and decided to allow some warmer soups and occasional brown rice in my diet, maintaining about 80% raw. Now it's the end of November and i am in the midst of cold #3. I went from not being sick at all for almost two years, to having three colds in three months on a raw diet. After the first cold, i suddenly had a surge in allergic responses to everything--dust, mold, cosmetics, chemicals and animals. It seemed as though the cold put my immune system on alert and after that i was ultra-sensitive to everything. The allergies have subsided, but now i get every cold that comes my way. I have two school-aged children and spend one day a week working in the classroom with my youngest one. There is always some kid coughing on me. I used to be a lot more resistant to illness, but now i'm wondering why i can't fend this stuff off.

What is the most baffling is that one year ago, i got about 4 1/2 hours of sleep per night, practically lived on coffee and cookies, was trying low carb diets full of meat and cheese, and i was constantly stressed out by trying to run a business and keep up with my kids' needs. Why did i not get sick then, but my immune system seems weak now that i eat a raw diet, meditate, do yoga and get enough sleep?

I definitely notice a difference in my ability to keep warm when i eat a bit of cooked grains or soup each day. It feels right for me to do this to get through the winter. When I eat 100% raw in the cold weather, i start losing weight again which is nice...but not worth it if i feel chilled to the bone. I am wondering if this coldness has been partially responsible for my getting sick so often.

Any ideas?

My 8 year old son had just eaten a big meal the other night. He leaned back, patting his tummy, and said, "I'm getting fat. I think i'm going to try a raw food diet."

"Hmmm, " i said, "How long do you think you could last on a raw food diet? I mean, all you'd be able to eat is smoothies, salad, fruit, nuts, apples and almond butter..." He was nodding as i listed these things, and then he added,

"Well i could also eat little bits of leftovers like you do, mommy"

Honey....buy local honey and know your beekeeper

See below

Chinese honey now reported among import dangers
15 senators urge FDA to get tough on adulterated sweetener

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted: June 26, 2007
1:00 a.m. Eastern

© 2007 WorldNetDaily.com

WASHINGTON – First it was poisoned pet food.

Then came the warnings that imported seafood was unfit for human consumption.

Then it was recalls of toys, fireworks, electrical products and much more.

Now China is under fire for shipping to the U.S. honey tainted with a potentially life-threatening antibiotic as well as adulterating exports with sugar.

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., is blowing the whistle on the latest China import scandal. He is calling on the Food and Drug Administration to implement bans on tainted honey, most of which comes from China.

"Almost 70 percent of the honey consumed in our country is imported – most of it from China," says Conrad. "Unfortunately, China has a long track record of importing adulterated honey and engaging in other fraudulent conduct in the honey trade. These actions not only hurt honey producers in North Dakota and across the country, they also present needless health risks to our consumers."

In a bipartisan letter signed by 15 senators, Conrad urged the FDA to act on a petition for a standard of identity for honey. Such a regulation would provide a uniform, legal definition of honey purity levels that would aid regulators. Imported honey is an ingredient found in a wide array of products including cereals, snacks, meats and beverages and is also a common ingredient in many health and beauty products.

In 2002 and 2003, the FDA and U.S. Customs seized multiple shipments of Chinese honey at U.S. ports which were contaminated with chloramphenicol, an antibiotic that is banned in food products in the U.S. because of its potentially life threatening effects.

More recently, there are reports that imported honey is being blended with sugars or being labeled as a blend to avoid U.S. duties. This honey is subsequently sold to U.S. processors as pure honey. A long-time supporter of North Dakota's honey producers, Conrad recently called on the secretary of agriculture to address the growing problem of Colony Collapse Disorder, a mysterious condition destroying colonies of honeybees across the country.

North Dakota ranks No. 1 among honey producing states in the nation.

Conrad's letter cited recent scandals over China imports as a reason for renewed concern about honey.

"Recent alarming reports of adulterated food ingredients imported from China raise very serious concerns about the threats posed to U.S. consumers by impure and unfit food imports, and about the steps being taken by the U.S. government to detect and stop such imports," he wrote. "In this regard, we have particular concerns about imports of honey into the United States."

He pointed out that the antibiotic chloramphenicol is a food contaminant that can cause idiosyncratic aplastic anemia.

"As shown on the FDA's on-line listing of import refusals, the growing number of import refusals for impure, adulterated or otherwise unfit products from China far exceeds refusals for other countries," wrote Conrad. "We fear that these reported incidents may only be a portion of a much larger problem. We are particularly concerned about common practices that may enable those who adulterate or mislabel imported honey to readily escape detection. For example, the continually changing list of enterprises selling honey from China, and the extensive history of fraud and illegal transshipment in honey imports from China may make it especially difficult to determine the actual producers of impure imported honey."

Conrad's action comes in the wake of similar concerns expressed by Sen. Dick Durban, D-Ill., and Sen. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn.. Those followed WND's series of explosive investigative reports into threats to life and limb from Chinese products, reports that got enough attention from U.S. lawmakers to begin the process of developing standards and increasing inspections.

"I think we have reached a point, unfortunately, where 'made in China' is now a warning label in the United States," said Durbin.

Durbin specifically referenced statistics gathered in WND's investigation of product recalls from China. WND found most of the Consumer Product Safety recalls involved imports from China. Imports from China were recalled by the CPSC twice as often as products made everywhere else in the world, including the U.S., the study of government reports showed.

Concerns with China imports began with the pet food scandal that killed or maimed up to 39,000 American cats and dogs. WND's investigation followed into imports of foods meant for human consumption. The New York Times and other major U.S. media followed.

As WND reported, China, the leading exporter of seafood to the U.S., is raising most of its fish products in water contaminated with raw sewage and compensating by using dangerous drugs and chemicals, many of which are banned by the FDA.

The stunning news followed WND's report that FDA inspectors report tainted food imports from China are being rejected with increasing frequency because they are filthy, are contaminated with pesticides and tainted with carcinogens, bacteria and banned drugs.

China consistently has topped the list of countries whose products were refused by the FDA – and that list includes many countries, including Mexico and Canada, who export far more food products to the U.S. than China.

While less than half of Asia has access to sewage treatment plants, aquaculture – the raising of seafood products – has become big business on the continent, especially in China.

In China, No. 1 in aquaculture in the world, 3.7 billion tons of sewage is discharged into rivers, lakes and coastal water – some of which are used by the industry. Only 45 percent of China has any sewage-treatment facilities, putting the country behind the rest of Asia.

Durbin and Sen. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., held joint talks with FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach and Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong over the contaminated shipments from China. The senators claimed a victory in the form of a proposed agreement between the FDA and Chinese government and a commitment for increased food inspections from the FDA.

"This proposed agreement between the FDA and the Chinese government is a significant breakthrough in terms of food safety – and American consumers stand to be the big winners," said Durbin.

In addition, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson raised the issue last month with Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi. When she returned to China, Beijing promised to overhaul its food safety rules. Also, China sentenced to death Liu Pingjun, the former head of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

China exports about $2 billion of food products to the U.S. every year and the total is rapidly growing. According to all U.S. food authorities, China is by far the biggest violator of food safety standards.

China is the second largest source of imports for the U.S. while the U.S. is China's largest overseas market and second largest source of foreign direct investment.

Pasteurization of Dark Leafy Greens? Today is the last day to comment!!!

I'm forwarding this note I got from my friend Rebecca. This is really sad.

hello all~

for all those concerned about our food supplies becoming even more nutrient-deprived and toxic, please read below...
and make a call/ send an email--the deadline for comments is TODAY, Monday, 3 Dec.

the idea is that the USDA is going to require that all greens be *pasteurized* prior to sale (first almonds, then leafy greens, this is crazy!!!)~and "pasteurize" is often a euphemism for "irradiate".

please follow the instructions below or call your senators and representatives directly to voice your opinion--the public comment period ends TODAY. yikes!

i dont want my lettuce cooked!
check out the links below for more information.

http://www.caff.org/foodsafety/
http://snipurl.com/1ug7d

love,
rebecca
Protect Fresh Leafy Greens and Family Farms
Federal Regulations Would Harm Sustainable Farmers and Biodiversity

We need your help in another battle to stop the slippery slope toward a sterilized and industrialized food system that threatens biodiversity and the very existence of family-scale farms that grow food in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sustainable way.

In response to the E. coli 0157 outbreaks last year in bagged spinach, the USDA is considering a change in the federal regulations that could potentially require growers of all fresh leafy green vegetables to follow specified guidelines in the fields and during post-harvest handling. The federal rules would be similar to the California guidelines that were set by large-scale operations after the outbreaks. The guidelines include growing practices that discourage biodiversity and sustainable/organic farming practices, deplete soil fertility, and create "sterile" fields—methods that have not been scientifically proven to actually reduce E. coli 0157 bacteria but are certain to reduce biodiversity, harm wildlife, and burden family-scale farms.

Small- and medium-scale farmers would bear the greatest financial and logistical burden of such specified guidelines. For example, if the rules require testing for pathogens at every harvest—as they currently do in California—then large-scale farms that grow one type of crop and harvest only one to three times per season would pay much less than smaller and more diverse farms that continually harvest many types of vegetables. If regulations dictate a single set of growing practices and food safety measures, which are appropriate for large-scale "factory farms" but not for diverse family farms, we risk losing the very farms that grow leafy greens in a healthy and sustainable way. A one-size-fits-all regulation will not work!

The rules threaten biodiversity and environmental sustainability in several ways. Farmers would be encouraged to eliminate wildlife and any vegetation that may provide habitat for wildlife. The rules also discourage the development of microbial life in the soil. These methods have not been shown to reduce the risk of harmful bacterial contamination. In fact, sustainable farming methods that promote microbial life in soil have shown to reduce E. coli 0157 because it has to compete with other microbes and is therefore less likely to thrive. However, the aim of these rules seems to be for sterile fields that support no forms of life, except for the leafy greens.

We must make our voices heard, telling the USDA that we do not support federal rules that would put a great financial and logistical burden on family-scale farmers, discourage environmentally healthy ways of farming, and harm wildlife.

Taking action is easy, but with a December 3 deadline for submitting comments to the USDA, we need your help today. Please tell the USDA that food safety is an important concern, but that mandating measures with no scientific basis that will put small farmers out of business, and harm wildlife, is not the way to go.

Please submit your comments today by downloading the sample letter below or writing your own message and posting it online (see instructions below), or faxing it in. The USDA is specifically asking citizens to comment on its plan to implement these rules, and it's important that you tell the USDA that you want to ensure access to fresh, leafy greens and that you oppose a Marketing Order or Marketing Agreement that would impose federal standards for all growers of leafy greens. Remember that every comment counts, but individualized messages/letters carry more weight than form letters.

1) To submit online:

Go to www.regulations.gov. In the middle of the screen, you will see "Search Documents."
In Step 1, choose "Documents with an open comments period"
In Step 2, choose "Department of Agriculture"
In Step 3, choose "PROPOSED RULES"
In Step 4, choose "Docket ID" and then type in "AMS-FV-07-0090"
Hit "Submit."
Next, you will see a column titled "Comments, add/due by." Click on the tiny tan dialogue icon, and you are now ready to submit your information and your comment.

2) To fax: (202) 720-8938.

** Please make sure that your letter references Docket Number AMS–FV–07–0090.

In addition to the Cornucopia website more information on this matter is available by visiting the California-based Community Alliance for Family Farmers' website at http://www.caff.org/foodsafety/. We thank CAFF for their diligence on this issue.

Hi. Glad to be a part of the tribe. I am new to the raw vegan lifestyle and currently 100% raw on day 8. I feel better than I have in a very long time both physically and spiritually. I enjoy the beautiful food and even the time it takes to plan and prepare. One concern I have is supplements. I am a 50 y/o female approaching menopause and all the stuff that goes along with that especially bone loss. What supplements should I be taking besides my B vitamins? What is a good source of protein supplementation or is that even necessary? Is there anyone living in or near Ventura California? Thanks for your time.

Ok, so it's been 2 months since I've eaten bread and 2 weeks since I've stopped eating grains, as I've been cleansing.
I'm doing pretty well with it and finding that I don't even think of it most of the time. But lately I've been craving toast. It's been a comfort food for me all my life. Nice warm toasted bread with butter and jam...

I'm wondering what some of you do to satisfy that desire for a starchy snack.

Transition to Raw.......

So, I've been working towards raw for, like, three years........
And the last couple weeks I've been closer than not.
I'm about 75% now, trying to be raw......
And when I eat cooked food, I get heartburn!!!!!!
So should I just take the plunge?
The all-raw days I've had were only ruined by coffee, Emergen-C, and Alcohol.............
But it seems to be when I eat cooked after eating raw..........
I actually know the raw feels better. I feel lighter, more awake. And even after a cooked meal ( as low raw as I am) I feel tired.
Anyone else this sensitive?

Still feeling cold

Having once gone almost entirely raw over the period of 2 months and then moving from a temporate moist climate to a high-altittude extremely dry and cold climate, I have experienced the very unpleasant effects of feeling constantly cold. I mean a deep bone chilling cold from within (my Ayurvedic constitution is super high in Vatta.) It was during winter, and I found myself unable to sustain the raw diet.

And so recently I have taken a more gradual approach. I am still living in the cold dry climate of Calgary Alberta, quite similar to Mongolia. I have been incorporating raw back into my diet over the past few months, mostly with green smoothies, salads and raw superfoods like coconut, cacao and goji.

But I am still really struggling with feeling cold. I am wondering if 100% raw or 90% raw diet is attainable or even suitable for me. I have found the reintroduction of animal meats and eggs greatly beneficial (after 7 years veg.) I include a lot of ginger and spices in my diet and working on building more Pitta energies in my body through core strength training and proper breathing. This is helping a bit with feeling cold but with winter coming I am quite concerned. I've been told by my Chinese doctor that I do not do well eating too much raw food. Ayurveda seems to say the same. But in my heart I know that I would like to eat raw.

Any suggestions or your experiences would be gretly appreciated.

almond pasturization ruling reversed?

Originally published October 22 2007
Consumer groups join forces to reverse pasteurization ruling for raw almonds
by Mike Adams

(NewsTarget) The U.S. government is once again working closely with powerful corporations to knowingly deliver a nutritionally deficient food supply to the American people. This most recent example concerns the new rules by the Almond Board of California (ABC) and backed by the USDA to mandate the pasteurization of all commercially-grown almonds in California with substances that include highly toxic propylene oxide (PPO). As reported by the Health Freedom Foundation, propylene oxide is so toxic that it was "...banned by both the National Hot Rod and American Motorcycle Racing Associations, where it had been used as a fuel before being deemed too dangerous."

NewsTarget has reported on this story for several months, urging consumers to help stop the ruling from going into place, but corporations won the initial round. Since September 1st, all the almonds commercially grown in California have been pasteurized or sanitized through either heat treatments or toxic chemical treatments.

Both the Organic Consumers Association (www.OrganicConsumers.org) and the Cornucopia Institute (www.Cornucopia.org) have strongly opposed this almond pasteurization requirement. Today, the Health Freedom Foundation (www.HealthFreedom.net) announced a grassroots consumer action campaign to petition the USDA to suspend these almond pasteurization rules for 180 days. NewsTarget supports this petition and urges all American consumers to support this 180-day suspension of the killing of California almonds by clicking HERE to send an online message to your legislative representatives in Washington.

NewsTarget has published a CounterThink cartoon on this subject called The Killing of California Almonds. Feel free to share the cartoon or post it on your website (along with a link back to NewsTarget).

Today NewsTarget has also posted an exclusive video interview on the subject of almond pasteurization fraud. In the video, we interview Seth Leaf, co-founder of LivingNutz (www.LivingNutz.com), a small manufacturer of hand-made raw, sprouted nut products that has been caught up in the chaos of this bewildering decision by the Almond Board of California. Click here to view this video interview on YouTube.

Read NewsTarget's previous article coverage of this topic in the following stories:

Food Scam: Almond Board of California to falsely label pasteurized almonds as "raw"
http://www.newstarget.com/021776.html

Cornucopia Institute reveals agribusiness conspiracy to mislead consumers over almonds
http://www.newstarget.com/021783.html

Almond Board of California changes its story following NewsTarget article
http://www.newstarget.com/021781.html

Fraudulent marketing, illegal labeling
The Almond Board of California is right now conspiring with the USDA to allow the fraudulent labeling of almonds that are being sold to consumers. How? Pasteurized, fumigated or cooked almonds will be openly labeled as "raw" almonds. As you can see from previous stories published by NewsTarget on this issue, the Almond Board of California recognizes no substantial difference between cooked and raw almonds, and thus does not see any need to distinguish between them on product packaging.

I believe this position is an example of outright consumer marketing fraud designed to misinform consumers and protect the sales of pasteurized almonds by intentionally mislabeling them as "raw." No reasonable person would dare say that cooked eggs are the same as raw eggs, or that cooked lettuce is the same as raw, fresh lettuce, but somehow the Almond Board of California continues to pretend that cooked almonds are virtually identical to raw almonds. The advocating of this position is, in my opinion, a violation of truth in labeling laws and nothing short of a corporate-masterminded conspiracy to intentionally hoodwink consumers by selling them an inferior (cooked) product that is knowingly mislabeled.

Raw almonds, for the record, are vastly superior to cooked almonds in terms of nutrition. They contain more anti-cancer phytonutrients, more usable protein and healthier fats. Once these elements are exposed to high temperatures (through pasteurization or other methods), these nutritional qualities are irreversibly degraded, rendering the almond deficient in the nutrients it had when it was first harvested. This degradation of health-enhancing nutrients has the result of contributing to nutritional deficiencies and imbalances in North American consumers -- people who are already in a state of chronic nutritional deficiency due to the consumption of other processed foods.

It also sets a precedent for the intentional mislabeling of food products being purchased by North American consumers. The FDA is already on record stating that irradiated foods should not be truthfully labeled as such since the label might "confuse" and "misinform" consumers (who are apparently too stupid to understand what irradiation really means, the FDA believes). Now, with the USDA backing this fraudulent labeling decision by the Almond Board of California, we have two dominant government agencies (the FDA and USDA) who are both in favor of the blatant mislabeling of food products in order to keep consumers ignorant of how their foods are really being processed and degraded.

Two issues need to be reversed
There are really two important issues here that need to be reversed in order for the almond industry to regain any real credibility with consumers:

1) The ruling requiring the mandatory pasteurization or fumigation of all almonds needs to be rescinded. Raw almonds represent no legitimate health risk whatsoever to consumers. (There's far more e.coli in meat products, and you don't see the U.S. government banning raw meat, do you?)

2) The labeling of pasteurized almonds as "raw" needs to be stopped. This is fraudulent, misleading labeling and it has the effect of causing consumers to realize they cannot trust ANY almonds, regardless of what the package says. After all, if pasteurized is labeled as "raw" then what does "organic" mean on the package? What does anything mean? The words on the package apparently have no meaning at all; at least not one that regular people would understand and agree to. This will ultimately lead to devastating financial losses among U.S. almond growers. In my interview with Seth Leaf, for example, we learn that Seth's company, Living Nutz (www.LivingNutz.com), now has to purchase raw almonds from Spain!

The Almond Board of California has, in my opinion, lost its marbles. Can we interject some sanity into this issue and pressure the ABC and USDA to restore integrity to the U.S. almond industry? We'll know soon enough. In the mean time, you can play an important role in these three ways:

Action items
1) Contact your representatives in Washington and call, write or fax them a letter telling them strongly oppose this fraudulent action by the ABC and USDA.

2) Share the cartoon: The Killing of California Almonds.

3) Share the video interview: Seth Leaf speaks out about pasteurized "raw" almonds.

Thank you for your effort. Together, we have a legitimate shot at bringing the almond industry back to its senses and restoring truly raw almonds to the marketplace. And if this doesn't fly, NewsTarget will be announcing a global boycott of almonds grown in the United States (and asking you to join along...)

I've been 100% raw for the last 3 weeks and having anxiety/depression issues. I don't know if it's just part of the cleansing process, but I've had these issues off and on before.

I'm looking for a raw friendly naturopath/holistic healer to look and see if I need additional support for the endocrine/digestive/neurological systems with supplements or whatever.
Enzyme inhibitors

I've heard that raw seeds (soy, almonds, etc) contain enzyme inhibitors that prevent not only their digestion but also absorbtion of other nutrients. I've been told the way to avoid this with soy is to only eat fermented soy. Any thoughts or info would be helpful.

Blentec Blender or Vitamix

Hi,

Just wondering what to get and I'd ideally like it to replace having to buy a juicer. I know Blendtec has a juicer button. Also know there are pros and cons to both. I'm worried that Blendtec is computerized so if it breaks down it will cost a lot to fix but also it's more powerful. Don't like that you have to get the wet/dry container with Vitamix but they have a longer warranty. Can they both make the same things? Is one louder?

Pros? Cons? Suggestions, ideas?

Okay, if you can't share this with a few thousand of your closest friends.... : )
doing a lot more raw and veggies, pumped up my water, still not as regular as I should be.
I'm blessed to be around healers, one suggested enzymes, Bob Parker's brand.
Any thoughts?
