weight loss

I have a sweet tooth and have been trying the raw food lifestyle for about three weeks. So to "feed" my sweet tooth I now have dates and fruit to enjoy! Plus coco's which I love cracking open and drinking. I have made a wonderful coconut pie from a famous raw food cook book and also enjoyed the "laughing giraffe raw granola" in the morning...which is definately sweet! My struggle is that one of the incentives for going to raw foods for me is that I really do need to loose weight. I have about 10 to 15 pounds of excess fat on my body that makes me feel terrible. I work out 3 to 5 days a week. I have been vegan up until now. I thought that on the vegan diet eating soy, dark chocolate and popcorn were some of the things really keeping the weight on me. I thought cutting all of that out on the raw diet it would come right off. SO my question is do you think the dates and coconuts and raw granola are keeping the weight on? Other than those sweets I eat fresh fruit in the morning and fruit smoothies I make in my vita-mix. Then I do a big raw salad with sprouts and seeds in the afternoon. I usually have some mac nuts or a "raw snack bar" for snack or sometimes raw flax crakers and homemade quacamole, or raw "kale chips" (just dehydrated kale with cashew and nutritional yeast on top) and then I will go out to our local raw cafe for dinner. Or if I am home I will make another big salad for dinner at home. If it is after 6:00pm I try and just have a small little salad, so as not to go to bed on a full stomach. I thought with all the changes I have made cutting out all lactose soy and gluten and going raw I would finally drop some of these pounds. Is it the fruit and coconuts and dates? The nuts and seeds? I feel I do eat a lot of vegies every day. What could I be doing different?

eating avocado pit

I came upon a site that mentioned eating an avocado pit - putting it in a blender, pulverizing it, and drinking it. I had never heard of this so I googled the subject. I didnt find much. One site said it was high in "chi", another said it was toxic.

Anyone ever eat an avocado pit?

fructose intolerance

Well, after a long struggle I've finally figured out what's wrong with me- I have a fructose intolerance. I can't imagine anything worse! I love to live off mainly fruits in the summer, but it makes me bloated and gassy and crashy off the sugars... has anyone else encountered these troubles? There's a huge list of stuff that's right out... including dates, raisins, most fruit, even tomatoes... I'm the saddest.

Anyone else experienced this? Not sure how this is going to work for a raw foodie...

Whole Foods Boycott (off topic)

No, I will not be among those who boycott Whole Foods because of the opinion piece offering an alternative to ObamaCare penned by Whole Foods CEO John Mackey.

The thing I find most distressing is that no one I've talked to who supports the boycott even knows what he said - they just keep repeating the lies that they read on the FaceBook group or the various logs. I suggested they actually READ his article (I certainly did), but they ignore and continue to repeat lies.

It amazes me how people will ignore truth in order to sustain belief.

Rant over - you may now return to your regularly scheduled programming....

I know this sounds like science fiction or a conspiracy theory, but it's not. It is a complete reality and a huge danger to humanity. Please check out the following petition and sign it. As crazy as this may sound but mind control energy weapons is a reality. Millions of people are suffering from the mental abuse and torture of these weapons that are not openely talked about or known, or "declassified." The abuse is largely sexist and racist and targets people who are of certain ethnicities... primarily who are not white. The abuse is deliberate, cruel, and is done by directing energy beams, via satellite or other means, onto the body/person/ brain of the individuals targeting certain centers of the brain to elicit responses or actions. The companies, military, governments who are doing this also use sound weapons to direct sounds, subtle or not, vibrations and energy in the mind or environment of the victims to harrass, abuse, and control the actions of these individuals. Whether they are able to do control the person or not, they definitely abuse and severely mentally and psychologically hurt the victims.

Hello all blessed beings! I just got my first good dehydrator. An Excalibur, I am so excited to start this raw food adventure. I want to start with making some fruit leathers. Does anyone have any good recipes, suggestions, etc. I was just going to blend up some apples and bananas together, add a bit of honey and put it in the dehydrator on the teflex sheets. Not sure what temperature to use....thank you.

It's a good run down of the creation, incorporation, merger and acquisitions, and distribution of organic products and their companies. It's quite an eye opener. I'm told it came from the Arianna Huffington blog.

manual juicer

I am looking for a resonably priced, yet sturdy manual juicer, preferably multifunctional.
I already have a Greenstar and I like it, though it is a pain to clean. The new situation is that my daughter and I are moving to an apt which is all electric. That means no more heat and hot water included in rent payment. So anyway I can conserve is a bonus, besides the fact that a manual will be more compact and space saving.

There is one on the market that, if memory serves, is called the Healthy Juicer. It sells for a lower cost than the popular wheatgrass juicers, but it is not constructed of all stainless either. The majority of this made of poly and lexan. It seems as though the juice may not be as refined as with the Greenstar, but this is not a problem for me.

The thing is that I always consider what I've read and have been told about stainless and nutrition retention. The purpose for using ceramic knives, the effects blender blades have on food, etc. So is using stainless juicers and stainless jugs to carry this juice just as detrimental to vital nutrients?
maintinaing healthy raw diet without a kitchen

hello raw brothers and sisters!

I am going to be transitioning to a raw food diet while I do some traveling this summer. I won't have the luxury of a juicer or a mixer and will mostly be eating meals that don't require much preparation. (think nuts, fruits, veggies, anything that is easy to pack and carry in a bag)

So what I am wondering is what I should be considering as my primary food source. I am thinking lots of goji berries, various nuts, fruit, an avacado or two, and maybe an occasional smoothie. I don't mind decreasing my intake, but at the same time I am wanting to increase my health benefits.

Should I consider supplements? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

in light,

michael

p.s. I just purchased eating for beauty by david wolfe, so as soon as that arrives in the mail I will have access to that information.

Bad News For Big Ag — GMO Crops Don’t Increase Yields

Food Renegade
Sunday, April 19th, 2009 | Author: KristenM

You’ve heard of GMO crops, haven’t you? GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are crops which have been substantially altered using genetic engineering. They’re unnaturally modified foods whose safety is dubious at best. (Many European countries have banned their use completely.)

And unfortunately, they’re quite pervasive here in America. 90% of the soybeans grown in the U.S. are GMOs, as is 63% of the corn. These expensive crops were sold to farmers around the world by a handful of mammoth biotech corporations with promises of radical yield increases.

According to a recent report published by the Union of Concerned Scientists, those were empty promises.

While it’s true that we’ve seen crop yield increases in the fifteen years since the use of GMOs became widespread, the report argues that other factors led to those increases. In fact, when they contrasted yields of genetically engineered soybeans to low-input, organic yields for soybeans, the low-input crop outperformed the GE crop by 13%.
Codex Alimentarius the real threat to world health

Codex Alimentarius the real threat to world health

In January 2010' they shall attempt to take all our plants away from us' all herbs' vitamins and minerals are to be listed as prescription only medications'
That means no more online companies selling entheogenic plants' becasue even herbs the likes of garlic and vitamins the likes of Vit C shall be regulated and only available for purchase through government outlets'
This is against the constitutional rights of all peoples of earth'

Read on' standup and be counted' do something about this atrocicity'

More and more people are becoming concerned about the shady, secretive organization that is Codex Alimentarius - the thinly-veiled propaganda arm of the international pharmaceutical industry that does everything it can to promote industry objectives whilst limiting individual options to maintain health (which would diminish members profits).

Codex alimentarius is one of the major bodies behind the effort to limit access to nutritional products and information. Its motivation is not rocket science and neither is the source of its funding - money that somehow expected to return a profit to its members . . . Most of the information available regarding codex alimentarius refers to its role in the USA, but it is not a US-specific body. Far from it, Codex has wiggled its dirty little tentacles into just about every national or international body concerned with public health. Posing as a benefactor, it then uses its significant financial and political clout to do its masters bidding.

As you can read in the excellent article below, there is much to be concerned about when considering codex alimentarius - ignore it at your peril.

Codex Alimentarius - The Sinister Truth Behind Operation Cure-All
(From an original article by Ruth James)

What's really behind Operation Cure-All? Is it just the FDA and FTC taking their power too far? Or is there a deeper, more sinister purpose to this campaign? Who are Codex Alimentarius?

How could a country that prides itself in its freedom of speech, freedom of choice, and freedom of information be facing such severe restrictions in health freedom and dietary supplements? Haven't the people made their will known? Didn't our government pass the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act of 1994 to insure our right to health supplements?

Indeed, our government did. But the FDA and FTC have found ways to get around that. The laws put in place to protect us are being ignored. And what's worse is that those laws are about to be superseded, if the powers that be have their way.

OPERATION CURE ALL IS JUST ONE MEANS TO AN END
You see, Operation Cure-All is just a tactic, a vehicle, in a much bigger overall plan. It is a result of "Codex Alimentarius" (meaning food code) -- a set of regulations that aim to outlaw any health information in connection with vitamins and limit free access to natural therapies on a worldwide scale.

WHAT'S BEHIND CODEX ALMENTARIUS?
Behind the Codex Alimentarius Commission is the United Nations and the World Health Organization working in conjunction with the multinational pharmaceutical cartel and international banks. Its initial efforts in the US with the FDA were defeated, so it found another ally in the FTC. Now Codex, with the FTC and the pharmaceutical cartel behind it, it threatens to become a trade issue, using the campaign of Operation Cure-All to advance its goals.

Codex began simply enough when the U.N. authorized the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization to develop a universal food code. Their purpose was to 'harmonize' regulations for dietary supplements worldwide and set international safety standards for the purposes of increased trade. Pharmaceutical interests stepped in and began exerting their influence. Instead of focusing on food safety, Codex is using its power to promote worldwide restrictions on vitamins and food supplements, severely limiting their availability and dosages.

REAL GOALS OF CODEX
This is to bring about international 'harmonization.' While global harmony sounds benign, is that the real purpose of this plan? While the stated goal of Codex is to establish unilateral regulations for dietary supplements in every country, the actual goal is to outlaw health products and information on vitamins and dietary supplements, except those under their direct control. These regulations would supersede United States domestic laws without the American people's voice or vote in the matter.

HOW CAN IT BE POSSIBLE?
Americans gasp at the thought. It goes against everything America stands for. Many believe this can't be possible. The truth is, it's not only possible, it's required by the Codex Alimentarius agreement.
In fact, under the terms of the Uruguay Round of GATT, which created the World Trade Organization, the United States agreed to harmonize its domestic laws to the international standards. This includes standards for dietary supplements being developed by the United Nation's Codex Alimentarius Commission's Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Use.

The Uruguay Round Agreements carry explicit language clearly indicating that the U.S. must harmonize to international standards:

"Members are fully responsible under this Agreement for the observance of all provisions.... members shall formulate and implement positive measures and mechanisms in support of the observance of the provisions.... by other than central government bodies." [WTO TBT Agreement at Article 3.5]"

In other words, the federal government must NOT ONLY CHANGE FEDERAL LAW, but must ALSO require state and local governments to change their laws as well to be in accordance with international law.

Not only that, but Codex Alimentarius is now enforceable through the World Trade Organization (WTO). If a country disagrees with or refuses to follow Codex standards, the WTO applies pressure by withdrawing trade privileges and imposing crippling trade sanctions. Congress has already bowed to this pressure several times and so have the governments of many countries.

While the exemption clause (USC 3512(a)(1) and (a)(2) was created to supposedly protect our laws from harmonization to international standards, it has proven to be totally ineffective. The United States has already lost seven trade disputes despite the exemption clause. Due to the enormous pressures put on them by lobbyists from multinational corporations (who contribute millions to congressional campaigns), Congress bowed to pressure and changed U.S. laws.

It appears our government (as well as al others) is being manipulated one way or another to serve the goals of the UN, the World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization. Food control equals people control -- and population control. Is this beginning to sound like world government and one-world order? Could this be the real goal behind Codex Alimentarius?

The United States, Canada, the Europeans, Japan, most of Asia, and South America have already signed agreements pledging total harmonization of their laws including food and drug laws to these international standards in the future.

WHAT CODEX WILL BRING
What can we expect under Codex? To give you an idea, here are some important points:

* Dietary supplements could not be sold for preventive (prophylactic) or therapeutic use.
* Potencies would be limited to extremely low dosages. Only the drug companies and the big phytopharmaceutical companies would have the right to produce and sell the higher potency products (at inflated prices).
* Prescriptions would be required for anything above the extremely low doses allowed (such as 35 mg. on niacin).
* Common foods such as garlic and peppermint would be classified as drugs or a third category (neither food nor drugs) that only big pharmaceutical companies could regulate and sell. Any food with any therapeutic effect can be considered a drug, even benign everyday substances like water.
* Codex regulations for dietary supplements would become binding (escape clauses would be eliminated).
* All new dietary supplements would be banned unless they go through Codex testing and approval.
* Genetically altered food would be sold worldwide without labeling.

According to John Hammell, a legislative advocate and the founder of International Advocates for Health Freedom (IAHF), here is what we have to look forward to:

"If Codex Alimentarius has its way, then herbs, vitamins, minerals, homeopathic remedies, amino acids and other natural remedies you have taken for granted most of your life will be gone. The name of the game for Codex Alimentarius is to shift all remedies into the prescription category so they can be controlled exclusively by the medical monopoly and its bosses, the major pharmaceutical firms. Predictably, this scenario has been denied by both the Canadian Health Food Association and the Health Protection Branch of Canada (HPB).

The Codex Alimentarius proposals already exist as law in Norway and Germany where the entire health food industry has literally been taken over by the drug companies. In these countries, vitamin C above 200 mg is illegal as is vitamin E above 45 IU, vitamin B1 over 2.4 mg and so on. Shering-Plough, the Norway pharmaceutical giant, now controls an Echinacea tincture, which is being sold there as an over the counter drug at grossly inflated prices. The same is true of ginkgo and many other herbs, and only one government controlled pharmacy has the right to import supplements as medicines which they can sell to health food stores, convenience stores or pharmacies."

It is now a criminal offence in parts of Europe to sell herbs as foods. An agreement called EEC6565 equates selling herbs as foods to selling other illegal drugs. Action is being taken to accelerate other European countries into 'harmonization' as well.

Paul Hellyer in his book, "The Evil Empire," states: "Codex Alimentarius is supported by international banks and multinational corporations including some in Canada, and is in reality a bill of rights for these banks and the corporations they control. It will hand over our sovereign rights concerning who may or may not invest in our countries to an unelected world organization run by big business. The treaty would make it impossible for Canadian legislators either federal or provincial to alter or improve environmental standards for fear of being sued by multinational corporations whether operating in Canada or not.

This will create a world without borders ruled by a virtual dictatorship of the world's most powerful central banks and multinational companies. This world is an absolute certainty if we all sit on our hands and do nothing."

This is the future the FDA and FTC are striving to bring us via Codex harmonization. Is this a future we are going to willingly accept or prevent?

WHY TARGET THE INTERNET?
It is no accident that the FDA and FTC are targeting Internet health sites through Operation Cure-All. We are standing in the doorway of an unprecedented revolution -- the information revolution brought about by the Internet.

Now all people everywhere have the ability to learn about anything that interests them with just a few clicks. History has shown that informed, educated people change civilizations -- they change the flow of thought and they change the flow of money. They can even change the direction of a country. When similar transitions have happened in the past, the powers that existed did not give up willingly. The Catholic Church fiercely protected its practice of selling 'indulgences' as a forgiveness of sin. When the practice was abolished, the Catholic Church lost a great deal of power and money.

When the printing press was invented, books were banned and printers were imprisoned by the authorities, who feared an educated public could not be governed. In the same way, the medical monopoly (and the UN) now fears that a public educated in health and privy to the shortcomings of modern medicine could not be controlled. Loss of control means loss of revenue and loss of power. And they are doing everything they can to stop progress so they can contain their losses and strengthen their power.

The printing press changed the world. Can you imagine what life would be like today if the book banners had their way? But because the printing press won out, society progressed and freedom was embraced. The Internet is changing the world in an equally significant way. While the entire Internet can hardly be suppressed, the pharma-cartels and their backers are looking to protect their interests by restricting as much information as they can on the Internet.

Will we, the people, win out again -- or will the UN and the World Health Organization agenda and the pharmaceutical cartel change the course of history and take us back to the "dark ages" of medicine?

WHAT CAN WE DO?
Step number one is learn as much as possible about this issue. Here are some websites where you will find a great deal of information:

Signing petitions is fine, but not nearly as effective as writing to your congressmen and congresswomen. Write to them insisting we hold a PROPER Oversight Hearing on Codex. An oversight hearing was held in March, but the truth was not allowed to come out. Witness who could have exposed what was going on, and who wanted to testify, were denied the opportunity to testify. Congress is strongly resisting another Codex hearing, telling their constituents it is not necessary. This could not be further from the truth.

CTM Comment: Codex is of course the single most virulent assault on human freedoms in recent times. The desire to control of vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutritional factors has ironically come about as a result of the inability of orthodox medicine to destroy the practice of the public practicing health without drugs. Now government and the chemical industry will seek to control and profit from that which was available directly to the public in times gone by.

Overturning the Codex by a mass public backlash is CTM’s sworn goal. This can be accomplished only with large numbers of the public all committed to this endeavor. As the above article states, the Internet itself has been able to grant access to information freely to anyone seeking it, and this has destabilized the flow of money and profits to institutions which have traditionally believed their highly lucrative monopolies to be safe.

General Mills has purchased (raw food) Larabar for their Small Planet division.

Think this will help make a positive change within GM, or will GM negatively impact Larabars?

Will you continue to purchase Larabars?

i did 90% raw for a while(its winter though) and found i felt reallly nice and kind and clean but i got weak.. sort of slow and weak and blissful. i can see how this would make me live longer(slower) but i am working and need to have more energy. i feel like eating more firey foods would help.. any advice?

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and am hoping you guys can help me out. I've been making all different kinds of breads and crackers in my dehydrator but it seems that no matter what I do, the stuff turns out having this sort of bitter aftertaste. I've tried probably a dozen different recipes featuring just about every ingredient and sprouted grain and seed (flax, millet, buckwheat, chickpeas, wild rice, spelt, etc. etc). No matter what I get this same bitter type of taste lingering in my mouth and I really find it unpleasant! Anyone had this happen or know what I might be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help! Namaste from Portland :)

does anyone have info about the pros or cons of coconut milk? I used organic this morning, along with cantelope, bananas, and greens.
I'm looking for ways to boost flavor - two weeks into this after reading Victoria's book at Christmas. But there is no fresh fruit this time of year in the Northeast - and frozen berries just don't add any flavor. Ginger is great! This is really two questions, any help would be fantastic, THANKS!

I tend to suffer from low blood sugar and feel the need to eat heavy foods because they seem to stabalize me but the also seem to drag me down. I was doing 90% raw for a week or so and loving it I felt high and it was easy I only wanted raw. after a while I started feeling tired and extremely hungry feeling. so anyway to keep my anergy up I started eating more fruit than I ever consume especially in the winter I am candida aware and wonder how it reacts to raw and fruits. I did read some one mention green drinks to keep the energy high are we talking powdered green drinks or greens in a blender(i was doing both but only once a day) ......... also Ive only had positive accounts of raw first hand but it still scares me going raw you hear myths of people getting gaunt and their teeth suffering. I only feel fear when Im low energy and talking myself out of healthy choices. Im about 60% and after that short stint of raw you sure notice the difference between cooked and raw. I crave raw and fresh now so its all good Im looking forward to learning more and stepping up my rawness again.

what's the deal on almonds these days?

here's what i understand about almonds

since 2007?--because some people got Salmonella in 2001 and 2004 after eating raw almonds--all almonds grown in California are now sterilized using chemicals and/or high-temperature treatments, the most common sterilization method being fumigation with propylene oxide, an already-banned-in-many-countries possible carcinogen. Organic raw almonds only get steam-heat treatment, and small-scale growers can sell truly raw almonds, but only directly from their farm stands.

this brings up a few questions for me:

1. what about almonds grown outside california?

2. what happens if you soak almonds other than truly raw ones? would soaked fumigated almonds or soaked steam-heated almonds be bad to eat?

3. *should* raw almonds be regulated? did dozens of people die of Salmonella in 2001 or 2004 because of eating them? if not, what would it take to annul such a ridiculous regulation?

I am reading a lot about raw and am making slow changes. I have two kids and they have been getting sick a lot this winter and so have I. I'm feeling like eating all raw but don't feel educated enough. I would love to know your favorite resources and things that made the transition easier. Also all the gadgets? do you really need a vita mix or will any good quality blender do? One more question: If I go 100% raw am I going to go into total detox mode. most people consider me to be a very healthy person with good eating habits but I feel the gluck in my system. I would like to be mentally prepared for transitional hardship. I feel like if I can stick to raw for a month it would be hard to go back. Interested to hear others stories. Also more about raw kids. Crissy

It's hard to say this is a favorite because it's so depressing. But it's most definitely one of the more important ones I've seen.

"60% of Americas food is genetically modified. 50% of pregnancies in the USA result in loss of baby, birth defects or chronic illness." - NRC

Starlink transgenes cause sterility & birth defects

GM foods are one of many tools of genocide.

Promiscuous DNA is problematic.

I love Manna Bread! If you haven't tried it, look for it in the frozen section of the real foods store. It is made from sprouted grains and nuts and baked at low settings. I'm not sure what temperature its baked at and don't think it can be considered completely raw, but its awesome. I'm wondering if anyone might have a recipe for Manna Bread in the dehydrator?

Where do you get your Calcium?

Hi there!

I have recently done some interesting research on bio-available Calcium and wanted to share the info with everyone...

Calcium is an alkaline mineral responsible for many processes in the temple

~Aids in maintaining healthy cell permeability (allowing toxins out and nutrients in)
~Bone building and remodeling
~Muscle contraction
~Central nervous system function
~Hormone secretion
~Maintaining healthy acid/alkaline PH
Just to name a few....

99% of Calcium in the body is stored in the teeth and bones. The rest in the muscle
tissue and blood.

Until the age of 35 our bodies will store/bank calcium for later usage. After our 35th
birthday our bodies will rely completely on the calcium bank account it created and any
bioavailable calcium consumed in the diet.

Only 25% of men and10% of women meet the recommended daily dosage of Calcium.

Now a question that I have lovingly asked traditional (government taught) nutritionists is
- “If dairy is so high in absorbable Calcium, and it is so widely consumed...why are 90%
of people deficient in Calcium??” The answers have varied, yet none have quenched
my thirst for truth. At the rate that we are consuming dairy you would think that the 10
million Americans (80% of which are woman) that currently have Osteoporosis would
be swimmin in Calcium...but somehow not...And that the 34 million Americans that have
the premature form of Osteoporosis (labeled Osteopenia) would not be heading down
that predictable road so quickly.

Now where do you suppose much of the cow’s calcium is coming from? Or all the other
nutrients to feed this 1200 pound animal...? Would you believe me if I said...GRASS!

I say...Cut out the middle man!!! Eat more Plants!!

Here are a few options to take in Bio-available Calcium...

Kelp contains 10x the calcium of Milk in a wonderfully absorbable package. Oh and also more
than 60 essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements...like Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Iodine, Potassium, Zinc...its also high in fiber and contains proteins, Vitamin A, C, E, and Beta-Carotene (an antioxidant that is proving to be quite miraculous)...so if you think that Milk is your only option for Calcium..think again. This wonderful food is available in many ways..Kelp flakes on salad or in any recipe can easily go un-noticed...if you are sensitive to the flavor try high grade Kelp Powder put into veggie caps for easy doses...

Sesame Seeds raw, roasted, hulled or unhulled preferably ground for highest level of absorption. Tahini (sesame butter) is fantastic in salad dressings and a delightful source of Calcium.

Kale makes the best green smoothies or juices. Rich in amino acids, minerals, antioxidants, chlorophyll, fiber and anti-cancer phytochemicals, this powerhouse leafy giant is nothing short of GREEN. Great source of absorbable Calcium - with research to back up the much higher level of bio-available Calcium per cup compared to milk products.

Hemp Seeds are an excellent source of Calcium, among other minerals, essential amino acids, and essential fatty acids...essential means you need it, remember? :)

Parsley is splendid. It really is. And with these kinds of numbers...I am surprised its not spoken of more often. With a plethora of chlorophyll, amino acids and minerals...and a healthy dose of Calcium...you may think again when overlooking this pleasant tasting green herb at the grocery store. Add to your next salad or recipe for a fresh boost of flavor.

Broccoli has long been recognized as a healthy food. Now that we are choosing to consume it and not being pressured into it by our parents...it may seem more appealing. Again a swell source of Calcium :)

Dates Perfect 1:1 Ratio of Calcium and Magnesium.

Vitamin D is Calcium's sidekick...if you cant get any sun then you will want to supplement with a vegan vitamin D.

Yes, I'm bragging, but I couldn't do it alone.....

1) I had a guitar student recital recently (Dec 7 2008). At the recital, I sat quietly in the corner and played the C major scale.

The goal was 1000 reps (which, at 92bpm, takes 42 minutes), but I went for an hour for a total of 1440. Here are some clips, including the joking and snippets of some of my students:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ2iNtcbjGc&feature=channel_page

We had fun and the students did a fabulous job...but if you wanna rip those kinda reps, raw fuel helps!

2) I also turned 44 in late October. Here I am a couple of days before that proving that age is not an issue (especially if you're raw & active!). Bear in mind the world record is 44 when you see me knock out 40 chin-ups (that's NIN in the background):

Would anyone here be interested in an Essential Oils Tribe? I'll ask b4 I spam : ) Couldn't find a Tribe here for the life of me but I LOVE Essentials and would really appreciating learning other people's experience with them, be that medicinal, emotional or aromatic. There is a lot of information on them, but I find that sharing personal experience is best.. especially when dealing with contraindications.

Let me know and happy raw munching!
What a clever way to eat kale too.
dehydrated, ingredients: Kale, red Bell Pepper, Cashew, Lemon Juice, Nutritional Yeast, Himalayan Crystal Salt.

No wonder they sell out often at bay area grocers.

Hi all,
I've been attempting to go raw, but I had something unexpected happen. I gained three pounds from eating raw just for two days. I had no nuts, no oils, just green smoothies (made with coconut water), lots of veggies, etc. Has anyone had this happen? I'm usually somewhat constipated, so I was wondering if maybe it's because I'm eating amounts of greens that I haven't eaten in the past and that could be the issue. I did comsume lots of water. I guess my question is, does your body take a few days to adjust to the amt of fiber consummed?

Mel..thanks in advance for the help! :O)

Pregnant Sick & Transitioning

I dropped off Tribe for awhile due to personal illness. I am 5 1/2 months pregnant and very excited about that! (this is my girl. she'll have three very protective older brothers : )

However, just a month ago I was diagnosed with High Grade HPV. (4/5 women will have it sometime in their life and most heal within 2-3 years) However this has caused some mild dysplasia on my cervix. Ob has to keep an eye on it.

About a week after learning about this, I also learned that I have Ulcerative Colitis. Wooooo Hooooo! I'm on a roll right?!

I would LOVE to transition to mostly Raw food but am not sure now is the time to do so. My biggest issue before was caloric intake as I ran 3-6 miles every day and simply starved when I ate raw. (I've NEVER been a waif, always needed to feed the muscles on my bones)

Now my issue is pregnancy. Is it the right time to transition? I decided not to take the steroids my docs want me to take but I run the risk of allowing my body to become even more diseased or I run the risk of complications due to pharm drugs.

If you were pregnant, guys this might take some imagination : ), would you transition and how would you do it?

Also, just learned that my Mom is severely allergic to Wheat and we're clones so I'll bet that is part of my issue too. I'm a firm believer that aside from pathogens, most disease begins with food and can be healed the same.

Much love to all of you and happy holidays!

Okie Dokie. I am not Raw, but I am a vegan who eats simply, including a lot of raw plants.
When I eat a meal of raw veggies and fruit (If I do not dip them in hummus or have some rice or beans or seeds with them) I feel like I just plopped a rock into my digestive system and I can feel my stomach working really hard to eat it up. A bit of rice or a piece of bread always does the trick to help ease the discomfort. What is that??
I heard there is a book that talks about food combining with a raw diet called "raw, life force energy" or something along those lines. The author apparenlty addresses how to prevent that raw rock feeling.

Hi there :)
My family has asked me what I want for the holidays. I know they are expecting me to say a camera or a dvd player or some other gadget. But I don't have a need for these things. I am eating more raw nowadays, though and wondering what tool would make raw living better/easier/more fun. A dehydrator? A juicer? I have a crappy blender that does the trick for green drinks. Any suggestions?

Raw foods and coumadin

I know of some foods that throw off the PT INR. ( blood level ) Things like spinach, cabbage, most green veggies, broccoli, califlower, garbanzo beans / chick peas ( no more humus : ( ), beets, kale, etc...

Are there other foods that should be avoided by someone on coumadin? My brother was telling me he was eating cabbage the other day. He has a mechanical valve too. He said he didnt know. I gave him a list a year and a half ago! We can eat anything really. But if you do then you are supposed to eat whatever things you eat that are high in vitamin K on a regular basis. Then the doc can work your dose around your diet. Since I don't eat anything regularly, besides beer, I just avoid the things I know are high in k. But I worry that I may be eating some things that are high in k that I may not be aware of. Now I'm all freaked out about peas. There's a guy on YouTube that says you can't eat ANYTHING green. I swear my doc told me peas and green beans are okay. I eat snow peas too in Chinese food.

Is there a list somewhere of foods that are high in K? You'd think I'd know this after more than 6 1/2 years. I still havent even bought the Coumadin Cookbook. Hmm..

My understanding was that anything pasteurized was no longer raw. However, someone just told me that flash pasteurization doesn't stop all enzyme activity - just kills bacteria.

This doesn't sound accurate to me, but they said to think of it like a serious burn, but it doesn't kill.

I think they're wrong, but am open to the possibility that I'm completely mistaken on this. Anyone know for sure?

So, I recently received the five tray model as a gift from my mama, and I wonder if something is wrong, or not...when I put that weird hanging door on, it isn't flush at all, it sticks out, so there is air coming out the sides...at first I figured it was meant to be that way, but my foods are taking SO long to dry! Much longer than the little book says they will take...I tried calling the company, but couldn't get through, and got impatient...anyone know what I'm talking about?
Also, I'd love a few seed cracker recipes...I kind of made one up the other day with soaked sunflower seeds, flax seeds, lemon juice and homemade pickles, with a little sea salt...they are really tasty, great with avo and sun warmed tomatoes freshly picked from the garden, but I would love something similiar to Lydia's sunflower bread...how do they get that awesome texture? Thanks all...Aura

It's the purest food on earth.
Don't forget to include some in your diet.
Sunshine pairs well with a nice fruit salad,
ripe berries, or something fresh from your garden.
Sunshine also compliments fasting nicely.
Maximize the sun's potential by baring as much skin as possible.
Don't worry about the neighbors, you will quickly absorb so much
LOVE and LIGHT
that you will appear as a supernova to onlookers, and they will be blinded by your radiance.
You are what you eat,
so eat the sun, sunshine.

Hey, you - Why Raw?

I've been asked to do a talk at a festival about being raw. Sort of odd - I'll be there as a musician, but I'm mildly uncomfortable talking about raw foods because I have no interest in converting people to being raw, which is what these sorts of things always feel like. But a friend mentioned that anyone attending the talk is likely to already considering increasing their raw intake or even in being raw, so....

So I'm wondering if perhaps folks here could share WHY they decided to go raw. Gives me some perspective and enables me to couch the information within different frameworks.

Was it health reasons? Lifestyle reasons? Spiritual reasons? Ethical issues?

Also, are you raw vegan? Raw omni? Raw fruitarian?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance!

sun pickles!

'Tis the season for making pickles, but these ain't your grandma's pickles, yo!
I used little pickling cukes from the farmers' market because i planted mine late and those are just starting to be ready. Wait until you know there will be full sun or mostly sunny skies for at least 2 days.

Start with a large, wide-mouth jar. The lid is not necessary as long as you have a rubber band and some clean lightweight fabric, cheesecloth or panty hose for the top. Slice a whole mess of little cucumbers in half lengthwise and arrange them in the jar in such a fashion as to fit a lot of them in there without cramming them too tightly. Put a couple of cloves of garlic in the jar, sliced once or twice lengthwise, and some sprigs of fresh dill. If you like your pickles spicy, add some hot peppers--fresh is best, but you can use dried.

In a 2 qt. saucepan, heat about a quart of water on very low temperature, ideally spring water or some other living water. The amount of water you use will depend entirely upon the size of your jar. If you make too much brine, you can save it for another batch, but you don't want to have too little to fill the jar. The only reason you are heating this water is to help dissolve the salt, so it's not at all necessary--i used very coarse Celtic Sea Salt so heating the water slightly did help dissolve it faster. I recommend the Celtic sale for flavor and mineral content. The amount of salt can vary depending on how salty you want your pickles. I probably used about 2 heaping tablespoons in a quart or so of water. After it's dissolved you can taste and adjust--it should taste like sea water. To this brine add your pickling spices, either a commercially-prepared blend which you can probably find in bulk at your local natural food store, or try what i did and just throw in whatever seeds you have in the spice cabinet: dill seed, mustard, fenugreek, black pepper, i don't know what else you can use but maybe you can figure that out.

Ok so stir that all up in the pot--make sure you are not heating this brine past 90 degrees especially if you are using living water. Pour the brine over the pickles in the jar to cover them all the way up to the top but leave about 1/2 inch of bubbling room. I put a quartz crystal in the jar too. Use citrine for prosperity! Fit the fabric over the top and secure with a thick rubber band. Place the jar in an outdoor location that has unobstructed sunlight and leave it there for 2-3 days. If it's hot and sunny all day, 2 days is about right, but i left mine out for about 2 1/2 days and they came out perfectly. They should be bubbling with life and may have changed color slightly. The water should be nice and warm when you retrieve them from the sun.

Transfer to smaller jars and store in the refrigerator. They make great gifts, and these pickles will travel well to Burning Man or other camping adventures. Salty, enzyme-rich fermented foods like this are great in hot weather and these pickles are particularly good in nori or lettuce wraps. I'm going to make one more big batch while i can still get loads of cukes at the market.

happy pickling!

Whole food supplements I think are best.

When I first started studying herbs for the sake of my health problems, I came accross the statement that whole foods supplements were best.. Really didn't understand the difference back then between those synthetic vitamins available and stuff more natural.

But now I try to take as much whole food supplements as possible my two favorites are brewyers yeast, and alfalfa. Which I believe everyone should take, the first helps control blood sugar, plant protein, B12 vitamins, kills live yeast cells, it's so uncelebrated.

The next, so many minerals, it's like eating a couple of salads a day, helps with being regular, that's good too. The newest one I came accross was blue green algae, not spirulina, which is great too. But something called AFA, I started taking this capsule which comes from an extract.

The buzz is that this concentrated AFA helps your body release stem cells from your own bone marrow. Now there is research behind this, which I feel everyone should read to be informed. I have heard such great things about it from people who are suffering with several ailments. I have noticed increased energy and less joint pain.

I don't know what else it will do, but I really look forward to living a more normal life again. If you want to know where I got this stuff from, look on my profile under the first link listed. They will send you more information about this stuff, and a free e-book about it also. I am really excited about this new whole food supplement.

stayed raw while camping!

I posted 'raw on the road' before I left and I thought I'd give you all the update, that I managed to do 7 days of camping completely raw, successfully. Yay! I planned it out so that I had raw perishables that would last for up to 2 or 3 days since I knew my cooler would only stay cool for about that time. I took hardier fruits and veggies that would go a lot longer (the whole time actually), and dehydrated goods that would make it. I brought tiny lentils and beans that would sprout quickly, sprouting small amounts at a time.

What I did learn is that the essene breads (with wheatberry base) did not make it. Those need to be refrigerated! They fermented on me and were yucky. I also learned that sesame seed cheese goes bad as well. The energy cookies made it just fine, and the breakfast bars from RAWvelution. Dried fruits and trail mix, as well as avocados, were a saving grace; as well as hard apples, mangoes, and kiwis.

It was a good time, I felt great and was healthy, never succumbed to heat exhaustion or other ailments that the others seemed to suffer. I carried with me at all times a big jug of water with fresh herbs I found around the site (mint, lemon balm, etc). I danced like mad every night around the bonfire, barely slept for so much to do, and stayed completely raw, energized and healthy!

I know there has probably already been a thread about this, but does anyone know or have references to how much protein a human being *actually* requires; and how much a human that is lifting weights, running, etc actually needs? I got into this discussion with a friend whose trainer says nothing but "eat more protein!" and advocates drinking these ridiculous fake shakes and tons of chicken, when my friend would rather eat like I do. He's afraid of not having enough protein but I think we are brainwashed into thinking we need more than we do. anyone know of any studies? References? Guides to making complete proteins with raw sources? Best advice for raw athletes? Your experience as a raw athlete? Muchas gracias!

Coming hard times and WSJ warning to stockpile food??

Hello everyone,

I'd like to get your thoughts about what the Wall St. Journal is predicting as hard times to come. They are putting this in financial terms because they are all about finances. But there are warnings in this about food shortages, etc. I'm talking about the following article:

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/104914/Load-Up-the-Pantry

I do not want to eat canned foods or processed foods. But I'm wondering how wise it might be to ignore these kinds of articles. One of my friends has been stockpiling and warning me for a few months now. Her mother went through the depression and she thought that might be the most important thing we can do to help ourselves.

I knew when I was a teenager that we were headed for disaster because of overpopulation. It was certainly obvious to me, even as I lived in Idaho, which was a somewhat rural state at the time. So I refrained from breeding any more consumers. It was my contribution to humanity and the planet. But I never thought I'd see something like this happening by the age of 57.

Let's talk about this, please.

Hey all... any thoughts, suggestions for traveling and staying raw? Foods that travel well? Types of dehydrated things that seem to keep better than others?
I am traveling for 7 days next week- camping at an event actually, with no refridgerators... only coolers and camp stoves. Hmmm.

Also my job entails me driving all day in a vet truck... easy lunchy things that travel well, so I don't get stuck in the salad loop???
thanks!

i just got this model as a gift. it looks too little and flimsy to do much of anything. i had something bigger and tougher in mind. it's all .... plasticy. and the top feed is tiny. and i kind of hate it on sight. i see that it's a $100 juicer. not the high end certainly, but it's not the low end either. anybody got this thing? should i toss it back in the box and trade toward a bigger better model or am i missing something about this wussy looking little juicer?

Shivering on raw food

Sometime ago, I was fully on a raw food diet for four months before it got derailed by having to sit in a courtroom for six weeks and go to lunch in restaurants with my group all that time. For the four months, I was mostly using Gabriel Cousins' Rainbow Foods number I regimen except I was eating apples. During and after court, cooked food caused many cravings and I just never have gotten back on raw food 100% yet.

Anyway, the worst thing I found about the raw vegan diet was that I was shivering every night in my bed during the summer. Granted, it's not all that warm in the Bay Area, but it's not cold, either. I simply could not get warm no matter what I did. I felt like my insides were shivering. That made it difficult to sleep. It has sort of become a deterrent to getting fully back on raw food for me. I'm moving back in that direction, though. I believe it's the healthiest diet one can have. Now I'm eating a minimum of two raw meals a day and sometimes I go two days fully raw.

Someone told me that shivering is a detox symptom and that it goes away after awhile. Does anyone know about this? I am trying to add cayenne pepper to many dishes now to prevent the shivering. We'll see what happens when I go 100% which will happen once I finish a very few items in my kitchen that are not raw.

How have your periods changed, aside from no more cramps. Mine is two weeks late, but I'm not preggo. Has anyone lost theirs entirely? What's up with that? I don't bleed that much anyway... Just curious what other women are experiencing since it's hard to know what is "normal" on raw sometimes living in this cooked world.

i must bring it up. after being raw off and on for a while now, i noticed my stools are green. now in addition, my parents noted that my skin is yellow, proceeded to freak out and freak me out a bit, and asked if my stools are white (no!) however i wonder if anyone else has read up on or experienced green stools, or yellow skin?

Transitioning Advice?!

Hello!! I'm new to raw foods and in the transition phase. I am reading a lot about it and was hoping people here could enlighten me with your advice and experience..... Any and all help is appreciated!!! Also.... I'm finding the impliments needed to be a little expensive and was wondering if anyone could suggest things to do w/out buying everything before I'm ready.....

I guess my questions are this...

is it best to transition slowly or go raw right away???
are there things i can do during my transition (rejuvalac, acidophilus, etc.) and how much of these should i take?
how long can i eat comfortably w/out purchasing implements (dehydrator, etc.)

thank you :)

Agave and sustainability

Does anyone have accurate information from the inside of Agave Nectar production?
From what i've read, the plants are harvested and their big hearts cut out to get the sap out, which would effectively kill the plant. Given the explosive popularity of this sweetener, and the fact that it's now available in Trader Joes (and probably soon in mainstream markets), i have bot concerns and doubts about its sustainability.

My friend disbelieves that most agave nectar is pure. He doesn't think it's possible that there are enough agave plants in America to produce such an enormous quantity of nectar. I'm inclined to believe what i read on labels, naive as that may be, but i also suspect something fishy is going on.

I would love to hear from anyone who knows someone in the agave business, or anyone who has visited an agave farm, or otherwise has personal knowledge of how it's produced and distributed in the US.

thanks!
Second judge: "This is not raw. I call it as it IS"

Raw Noob

Ok, for years I've ripped on vegans, raw foodists, etc. I love a good steak and I'm not going into raw foods for any reasons having to do with any kind of morality. I've shunned the whole idea of raw foods for a long time.
For some reason I started looking into it. I stumbled into a video on youtube which was a trailer for an upcoming movie called Raw For 30 Days.
Well, my family has a history of diabetes and heart disease. I am 250lbs when I should be 165. I have a very low libido since I've gained weight, and I used to be skinny, hot and, um "active". Now, I'm very sedentary. I have bad circulation and my feet and calves are often puffy and shiny. Not good.

So, I'm looking for advice about transitioning into raw foods because I know if I just go all out right away I'll give up. I want to make a permanent change, not have another "diet". Any help or directions to good resources would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to find out exactly what I can and can't eat and would like to find a way to do this without having to do a lot of weighing, counting, measuring, etc. Is there a low maintenance way to do this?

I wanna look good for my first Burning Man this year!

I am not 100% raw, but I really try to incorporate a large part of raw/living foods in my diet. I'm anemic, and am told that there's not many vegetarian let alone raw sources for iron. I bought some black strap molasses for a start. I already eat a lot of dark green leafy veggies. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
